My Math Philosophy

I love all aspects of teaching, but I am truly passionate about math. I believe that every student has the ability to not only learn, but truly excel in math. My goal as a teacher is to encourage, motivate, and help my students experience success every day as they work to master the math standards. I believe that success leads to success, and mastering the foundational principles of mathematics taught in 6th grade sets students up for the higher level concepts they will learn in Jr. High, High School and college.
I believe that in order to experience success, students must be engaged in the learning process. Math is something students must do, not just hear. Lecture and rote memorization are not effective, so I provide multiple ways for students to engage with, practice, and experience mathematical practices. I strongly believe in small group instruction, partner and group collaboration, and independent practice time rather than whole group lecture and instruction time. My expectation for my students is that they will fully engage with this process, give their best effort every day, and experience the level of success that I know they are capable of.
