A Visit from Mazzie, the War Dog!

scan-6Today Mazzie, a war dog who was abandoned in Kuwait after his service, visited our classroom to wish us a Merry Christmas and to thank us for choosing K9 Rescue as our service learning project! These war dogs provide a great service to our military and are often abandoned after their missions are complete.  As mentioned in a previous post, our classroom is collecting spare change to donate to K9 Rescue, an organization that rescues war dogs after their service.  This will be first grade’s Service Learning Project for the year.

Little Bunny Foo Foo S.T.E.M. Project

I didn’t get as many photos of this STEM project as I would have liked, but I wanted to share the few that I was able to capture.  For this month’s STEM project, students created their own egg dippers using pipe cleaners, because “Little Bunny Foo Foo had stolen all childrens’ egg dippers!”  Students were very creative in their efforts to create dippers and execute the dipping, and, in the end, each student was able to bring home what we decided to call our “egg baby.”

A Special Visitor!

We had a visitor, Byron, from Lotus Park Assisted Living, come to read books to our first grade today!  We loved Byron right from the start – with his big, bright smile and Kris Kringle-like beard, Byron was an instant hit!

Lotus Park Assisted Living is our first-grade community partner.  We will be doing a couple service projects for them this year and we will be inviting the veterans from Lotus Park Assisted Living to our patriotic performance in the spring.

Happy Veterans Day!

We had a great day celebrating all the many service men and women who protect our great nation!  We were able to Facetime this morning with a soldier who is currently deployed in the Middle East, and it was fascinating to hear his description of the work he is doing there.  The students had a lot of interesting questions for him and it was a very memorable experience.  Please enjoy some of our pictures from Veterans Day, and remember to put a green light bulb in your porch light tonight to show support for our veterans!
