Online Orders for School Pictures

Picture Day, Independent Lunch Skills, and Water Bottles
Picture DayThis coming Monday, August 24th is Picture Day! Please be sure to fill out and return the picture order forms that were sent home yesterday, and be sure to come Monday wearing your brightest smile! 🙂 Please have your child wear his/her regular school uniform.
Lunch
For those students bringing home lunch, please spend some time this weekend helping your student practice independent lunch preparation. For example;
How to open containers and packages (i.e. opening pudding cups, putting straws in juice boxes, etc.)
How to properly and safely use a microwave (i.e. paper towel under food, how long to cook it, how to remove the hot food, what NOT to put in a microwave, etc.)
What to keep and what to throw away (i.e. keep tupperware, please throw away opened juice box even if not finished, etc.)
Water Bottles
Please feel free to send your child with a water bottle to keep in his/her cubby (preferably one that doesn’t spill easily, one that your child can easily open and close him/herself, and that is labeled with your child’s name). One drinking fountain with an entire class of students takes a lot of time and we want to make sure they are getting enough water. Thanks so much!

First Day Bliss, Hand-Hold Breakdown, Text Alerts, and Change to Traffic Duty
Hello, Wonderful Parents!We had an incredible first day in first grade! Your children are all superstars and should be commended for their wonderful behavior and efforts! I couldn’t be more excited to work with them this year!
Today after school we held hands in a chain as we walked to our “meeting tree.” Unfortunately, many of our little friends broke the hand-holding chain to walk away with parents or siblings before we reached the tree, so it was difficult for the children that they had been holding hands with to follow along to our “meeting tree.” If this caused any trouble for you or child in getting to the tree in a timely manner, I apologize. We will try again tomorrow, but please help us by encouraging your child to stay with our group, holding hands with his/her neighbors, until we get to the tree – even if he/she sees you or a sibling first! That will really help the children next to him/her.
Also, many children told me that they were supposed to meet parents or siblings at a different location, but when I asked them where they had been told to go, they were unsure or seemed confused. So please just be sure that your child knows where to meet you.
Text Alerts: if you didn’t get a chance to sign up for text alerts at Back to School Night, you can still sign up my e-mailing your full name, child’s name, and your cell phone number to me. My e-mail is mdunmeyer@questac.org. Text alerts are extremely helpful for receiving last-minute reminders and info.
Important Traffic Duty Change: Administration is now asking that I begin my traffic assignment (directing traffic behind the school on the North side) tomorrow instead of next week. So, from here on out, I will be able to walk the children to the tree, but then I will need to go to the back of the building and leave them in the care of other staff members out front.

Back to School Night and After-School Meeting Tree
I had a wonderful time meeting students and parents at Back to School Night! I am so excited to start this school year with you and make it a great year! Remember that the first three days of school (Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday) will be early-release days (dismissal at 1:00). We will have lunch time all three days, so please plan accordingly.
I wanted to be sure to let you know that for the first two weeks, I will be walking students out the Kindergarten (East) doors after school each day. We will walk around to the front of the school building (South side) to the tree that is right outside our classroom window. That will be our meeting place.
After the first two weeks, I am assigned to traffic duty on the North side of the school to assist with carpools. I will still be walking the children outside the Kindergarten doors, but I will no longer be able to wait with them beside the tree because I will be directing traffic at the back of the building. Other staff members will be on the South side of the building, though, and will be able to assist the children if needed.
If you choose to have your child meet you at another location, that is completely up to you. Please ask your child to tell me if you are having them meet you somewhere other than the tree so that I will know.

Below is a link to some reading passages that are very similar to the ones that your student will be encountering in the upcoming DIBELS test in January. Please use the “Level 100” passages to help your student practice for the DIBELS test, which is a very important one-minute timed test. Even those these are not the exact passages that will be used, exposure to similar passages such as these and a simulation of the actual timed test will prepare your child and help him/her feel more comfortable when they experience the real test.
