Word Study
Research has proven time and time again that the weekly spelling list that we use to use in classrooms, don’t help them to learn the word patterns in our English Language. How many times has your child received 100% on their weekly spelling test, then the next week in their everyday writing they go back to their old habits and spell the word wrong?
We chose to use an intense Word Study program called Words Their Way. The developmentally driven Words Their Way instructional approach is a phenomenon in word study. It provides a practical way to study words with students. Teachers use the Quantitative Spelling Inventory to determine what level each student is in in Word Study, Spelling and Vocabulary Study.
Students are then required to sort their Word Study list throughout the week at home and at school to practice their individualized Word Study pattern and master it.
The following links provide Powerpoints that can be used by teachers to model the word sorts or have individual students access the sorts on the computer.
