Scientific Method in 3rd Grade

Last week Mrs. Hutchison’s Class had a little fun with “Force,” and the Scientific Method. They learned that whenever you play with science you use the scientific method. They asked questions, made predictions, recorded our results, and finally wrote a conclusion.

The main thing they learned is that the more air there is in a ballon the more force you have. They also learned that science can be a lot of fun.

Kid Pix 3D Third Grade Examples

Our wonderful Third Grade have been having fun with our new Digital Art Computer Program! Kid Pix 3D! It can do soooooooo many wondeful things and is a fantastic resource available for our teachers and students!

Here are a couple of examples of what this

3rd Grade class can do!

Apple Store Field Trip: Mrs. Newton’s 3rd Grade

Last year we had the opportunity to attend field trips to the Apple Store at the Gateway in SLC.

This year we are also fortunate enough to have that opportunity! In fact, the field trip facilitator told me that of the 13 field trips they are doing this Spring, Quest Academy has 8 of those time slots!  Wahoo!

The Apple Store integrates right in our Charter and Technology Standards!  We are a dual platform school, and are very lucky to have Mac Operating Systems at our school!  We have a Mac Lab and several sets of Mac Laptops available for student use!

Mrs. Newton’s class hopped on the front runner and road down to SLC, then they got on the local Trax and it took them right to the door of the new City Creek which is now where the new and larger Apple Store is located!

Her class was greeted with a HUGE welcome from the staff at the store and all of the people in the store!  They all received a T-Shirt, Certificate and a Flashdrive …. but the best part was the fun time they had creating an IMovie Mother’s Day project!

It was a huge success and I am very excited to see what the other classes from our school will learn on their Field Trip to the Apple Store!

A big thanks to Apple and to all of the wonderful parents who attended the field trip!

Here are some snapshots for your enjoyment!

Tulips at Quest

We have planted seeds of excitement in our student’s minds!!!

Our 3rd grade and some of 4th were some of the few classes selected to Explore the Seasons in Journey North Gardens under the direction of Thanksgiving Point.

With this our students were provided Tulip Bulbs to plant in their classrooms and around our facilities.  The classes have been using a Tulip Garden Journal to record how the garden looks through observation.  They record their  observations, the temperature, use measurement, make predictions and add questions in their Journal throughout the school year.  This experience integrates, Science, Writing and Math!

In the Fall, our students planted the bulbs in and out of the buildings, right now, they just finished working together to put up a picket fence to protect one of our Tulip Gardens and later on this Spring they will take a field trip to Journey North Tulip Garden at Thanksgiving Point.

Christmas Spirit

At Quest we try to make every experience here a memory!

Here are some fun traditions we have at our school during Christmas Time!

Our Third Grade entered Grinchville!

Our Third Grade incorporated the themes of caring, responsibility, kindness into the Grinch activities, with each class having a grinch outside their door and students who exhibited kindness, caring, and responsibility were able to have a heart with their name placed on the Grinch. The goal was to fill the Grinch with hearts, There was also a rotation wherein the students were able to do a couple of art activities, sing a few grinchy songs, decorate a heart cookie donated by a local business, and make greenish flubber.

Our Fourth grade hosted its annual Polar Express Party on December 21st.

Students learned about the water cycle and then observed the water cycle in action while enjoying a steaming cup of hot chocolate. Students also had to decide which type of cloud (whipped topping) to enjoy on top of their hot chocolate. Students spent the week listening, reading, and viewing different versions of the polar express story and the compared characters, settings, main ideas, and plot differences between the versions. Special thanks to all parents who donated their time and purchased supplies to make this such a special and successful event.  integrating the Polar Express !
