What we are learning:

We are excited to begin Unit 1 in Language Arts. Below are the high frequency words, oral vocabulary words, and letters we will be mastering in the next 3 weeks. In addition, we are working on syllables, identifying the beginning and ending sounds of words, and writing our name.

In math, we have started our individual math lessons on iReady. We are working to master counting to 20 and reading and writing our numbers 0-10. In addition, we are identifying which number comes next when we hear any number 1-99. You can help us at home by saying a random number 1-99 and asking us which number comes next.

In science we are exploring the effects of sunlight on the earth’s surface. We have shown that we understand when we have suggested that we should stand in the shade to wait for our grown-ups rather than on the hot asphalt.

A glimpse into our classroom

Here are a few things we have been learning and experiencing this week:

We started learning sounds from our sound wall. We use mirrors to help our mouths form the sounds correctly. We can show you that the /m/ sound is a nasal sound and the /t/ sound is a stop sound. We are excited to learn our sounds this year.

We have been practicing reading and writing our names. We are also learning the names of all the friends in our class.

We are learning how to properly use the supplies in our classroom. For example; iPads, math manipulatives, white boards, crayons, etc. And we know a fun trick to help us hold our pencil correctly.

In math, we are exploring counting. We have discovered that there are things all around us that we can count. And we have started using the iReady math program on our iPads.

In science we are becoming weather watchers. We are starting to look for patterns in the weather. We have discovered that summer is a hot, dry season.

In social studies, we are learning about the importance of rules and establishing our own classroom rules.

We have completed our beginning of the year testing, smiled for picture day, and had our first fire drill. We have started “specials” classes; computer science (M), keyboarding and kindness (T), writing (W), and library (Th).

We have celebrated 6 friends birthdays and have enjoyed hearing each child’s “All About Me” favorites. We have many things in common with one another and can see that we are all special in our own way.

We enjoy singing and dancing, reading stories and telling stories. We look forward to recess, lunch, snack time, and more recess! We are making new friends and trying new skills. It is going to be great year!
