Welcome to 2nd Grade 2018-2019

Mrs. Lindsey

I am excited to start a new year with new smiling faces, new ideas and new friendships! We will be working hard to accomplish important skills and goals. If we work together, we can accomplish these goals.
Dress: Please send your child dressed appropriately for the weather and for the school’s dress code. Students who are not in school dress code will be required to call home so that a change of clothing can be brought to him/her. This will include socks and belts. The school dress code can be found in your parent handbook.
Homework: The secret to having a great second grade year is learning to love reading! It is my goal and desire to help each child love to read. Each student is expected to read at least 20 minutes every day. I will be sending math homework pages, as needed. Please check your child’s backpack daily for these pages.  This will help you to know what we are learning and help to enrich the class lessons. Please go over the math that is posted each week and read with your child nightly.
Grading: Quest Academy uses a quikset grading system which converts a number grade to a 1, 2, 3 or 4.Grades can be found on SIS, so please sign up for that through the school. Grades will be updated by Monday of each week. If a child is struggling with any subject, I will reteach the information to your child and give him/her an opportunity to redo the assignment for a higher grade. I feel success is imperative for a second grader’s future successes in school and it is my goal that each child leaves my class feeling like they can accomplish anything they set out to do.  Please let me know if there is any concern at any time! Please understand that the new math core curriculum is designed for your child to do some struggling while learning concepts. Please allow your child to figure things out before you try to help. Many new teachings will be unfamiliar to you so please do not try to teach how you were taught.
Birthdays: If you would like to celebrate your child’s birthday by sending items to school, you may bring non-food items for each student in the class. Summer birthdays will be celebrated on their half year birthdate.
Star Student: Each student can choose a week throughout the school year when they will be the STAR. This will be their week to bring show and tell items, present a poster about themselves and choose an activity that the class will do during their week. The sign up sheet will be available at back to school. I will assign students a week if they have not signed up for a week. This will be the only time that students may bring show and tell items. Students may bring a water bottle, with water only, to school each day. Please note that your child will lose his/her privilege of having a water bottle at their desk if they are not responsible with it. My goal is to provide a safe atmosphere that motivates students to learn and enhance self-esteem. To make this possible, each student will be expected to do his/her personal best and follow directions the first time given.  To accomplish this type of learning environment students will work together as a class to earn points for Friday free time which will consist of extra time to read, finish incomplete assignments, or do projects and learning games accepted by me.
Behavior: I use a card pulling system in my class.  I will give one warning and move the child from the situation if needed. If this does not deter the behavior then I will be having the student pull a card to yellow or red on the behavior chart. I will also be rewarding students for positive behavior by awarding stickers for a positive sticker chart. Once this is filled the child will be allowed to pick a prize.
You will be notified for continuous unacceptable behavior by a stop, think, do form which will be brought home and needs to be signed and returned. I will also notify you via email so that you are aware it is coming home. I encourage you to be involved in your child’s education.
Please contact me if you would like to volunteer some of your 30 hours in the classroom. I would love to work together to ensure your child’s success! Please notify me if you are interested in this service at any time during the year. Please contact me with any questions you may have. Email:slindsey@questac.org School phone: 801-731-9859 ext. 122
