Field Trip to Gibson Green Acres!

We will be going to Gibson’s Green Acres farm on Thursday, October 3rd. We will leave the school at 8:45 am and return at 12:00.

We will be going through a corn maze, sliding down giant slides and riding on a wagon to see the dairy cows. Please dress your child in good walking shoes for this field trip.

We can take a maximum of 8 parents per class. The first 8 parents, from each class, who pay the office their $4 donation will be those that will be able to go. Please do not pay for parents online! Student donations will be $6 each and can be paid to the office or online. This will include a small pumpkin.

Please click on the link to sign permission for your child to attend. This also gives us the required time to order sack lunches from the school if that is what your child will be eating. They may bring their own sack lunch but please be aware that there will be no microwaves.

Happy field tripping!

Homework

We as teachers are always learning how to be the most effective in our teaching and use of your child’s time. We recently learned that    “No research has ever found a benefit to assigning homework (of any kind or in any amount) in elementary school. In fact, there isn’t even a positive correlation between, on the one hand, having younger children do some homework (vs. none), or more (vs. less), and, on the other hand, any measure of achievement.” -Alfie Kohn

Due to these findings, we will continue sending optional math reviews home. They will not be graded or used for data. Simply something for you to see what we are working on in class for that day. We also encourage students to continue reading at home. This is not a homework assignment, but a bonding time between you and your child. Ultimately we want your child to love to read!

If you have questions about this change, feel free to contact us.

Thank you,

Welcome to Second Grade! We are so excited to meet our new students!

First things first for the upcoming school year, please subscribe to our blog by entering in your email to the subscribe box (located in the top left hand conner). By subscribing to our blog you will receive an email every time we update our blog.

We will have Back to School Night on August 16th from 5:30-7:30pm.  You may bring your classroom supplies that night.  The supply list is posted on our blog under Parent Info.  At Back to School night, you will be able to sign up for volunteer opportunities as well as for your student’s Star Student Week.

If your child was assigned to our class, they have the unique opportunity to have a team of 3 teachers supporting them this year.  We will be teaching the Math and Science block of the day. Mrs. Zimmerman will be teaching the ELA block.  We are very excited for this opportunity.

Our first week of school will be
August 19-23.  These will all be short days.  Short days will now be dismissed at 1pm.

We hope everyone is having a wonderful summer!

Summer Reading Programs!

Here is a lot of different awesome programs for reading over the summer! Feel free to browse through and find something your interested in doing!

BARNES AND NOBLE
This is a great program because all the students have to do is read 8 books, record the title & author on a journal & take the journal into the store once completed & they get to choose a free book.  They’ve changed it a bit this year, only accepting the journals in the month of August but they’ve also given a great list of books to read for the summer by age group.

WEBER COUNTY SUMMER READING
all they have to do is register & start reading.

 WEBER COUNTY EBOOKS

Once they click on the link above, they can choose what app to download for the ebooks or audiobooks.  I use the overdrive app & it works great.  This is a fabulous resource for those who cannot make it to the libraries over the summer.

UTAH STATE FAIR SUMMER READING
This one is pretty cool & they get free stuff.  Woot!  Shout out to Catherine Sumner for sending this info my way.  Thank you Catherine
