American Hero opportunities & information

Dear Parents,

We (the first grade teachers) are still in need of some volunteers to portray our American Hero’s.    Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr on 1/12 from 9:30-10:30am is available and also Thomas Jefferson on 2/2 from 9:30-10:30am.  If you could help with this please sign up on the link at the bottom of this email.

Thank you in advance!  We have an information sheet for you on the American Hero’s.

This year we will be learning about many of our great American Heroes.  We would like to invite those interested to come dressed as one of the characters and share their story with our students. Presenters will visit each 1st grade class for 7-10 minutes.

We hope to help our students create a memorable connection to history and understand the impact these instrumental people had upon our country.

Please sign-up now for the American Hero you would like to represent for our students by clicking on this link (copy and paste the link to your browser):

We hope you have enjoyed some quality time with your families and look forward to seeing your kids happy faces back tomorrow.

Friday, December 8 Happenings!!

Just wanted to remind everyone that this Friday’s dress down dollar will go to helping families in need of a Christmas. (It will help all the names on Quest’s Christmas tree.) Students who are not in uniform, and do not bring their dollar, will be asked to change… we’ve kind of had a recurring issue with this… so I just wanted to send out a warning.
Now on to better things… tomorrow is also our earned stuffed animal day! (And we’ll do our extra project!) Rules are: Animals MUST comfortably fit in the backpack; no talking, singing, lighting up, or other disruptive behaviors; and can sit on the desk quietly while we work. They are NOT to go outside and I am not responsible for lost or broken friends, so don’t bring the one that can never be replaced! ; ) Your kids have been really good during this crazy Christmas season… I just love them to pieces!! We should have a fun day!!

Week of Nov. 27

Student of the Week- none                         Birthdays- 11/30  Stella

It’s always hard to come back from a week off, but the kids are doing great! This week we are working on the long a spellings, introducing verbs, and learning contractions with “not”. We are also working on adding more details in our writing.

In Math, we are learning about strategies to subtract. A lot of it is review but using numbers to 20.

In reading groups, students need to be reading their leveled book EVERY night and putting it back in their homework pocket. That way we can read it again in guided reading group. Please have them read their book and talk about it with you. Practice with them to read in phrases, using the punctuation, and not choppy word by word.

Finally, remember that our Nutcracker Field Trip is Monday. The first 4 people who signed up will be our chaperones and contacted in the next few hours. Thank you to the couple moms who are willing to be backup! We’ll let you know if we need you!

We get to go to the Nutcracker Ballet!!

A HUGE THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU TO POCA!!!!!!
POCA IS GOING TO PAY FOR OUR ENTIRE FIRST GRADE FIELD TRIP! WE WILL BE GOING TO THE EGYPTIAN THEATER TO SEE THE MAGICAL PRODUCTION OF  THE BELOVED NUTCRACKER  Monday, December 4th.

We will experience the following:
America’s favorite holiday celebration…Join Clara as she travels to the Sugar Plum Fairy’s Castle to the Land of Sweets. It is the height of the holiday tradition where families and friends of all ages will be delighted with the magical story of Clara and her Nutcracker. Nothing brings the magic of the holiday season to life more than the worlds favorite ballet. In the  Julie Moffitt Ballet School “The Nutcracker” you’ll experience Waltzing Flowers, dancing polar bears and penguins, and adorable dancing sugarplums. Of course Dr. Drosselmeyer will have new magic up his sleeve to delight audiences of all ages in the Christmas Eve party scene! It’s one event, the one time a year…It’s the Nutcracker! The JMBS Nutcracker captures the best of imagination and delight of the entire family with colorful sets, beautiful costuming and sparkling choreography. The most entertaining fun and affordable event this holiday season.

Week of Oct. 23

I’m sorry this is coming in late… the website would not come up for me earlier. It’s working fine now (of course).

There is no student of the week and no birthdays.

We are starting Quarter 2 … it’s always fun to have a fresh slate. We’ll be starting all new Class Dojo points… and some new rewards to go with them.

In Math, we are starting addition to 20. I’ve sent home number lines and vocabulary cards for students to practice with. Remember that the math homework is from what we studied the week before. We want to keep reviewing. But also keep an eye on what comes home to see if they need to practice anything.

In Language Arts, we will be learning r controlled phonograms, contractions with ‘s, plural nouns that end in -es, and practicing the short /u/ sound in our spelling words. We will continue to build our stamina in writing and finishing up our last few letters in handwriting. We have so much to learn and the kids are doing awesome.

In STEM, we will see how we can improve our slime experiments. Some were very successful, while others… not so much…. LOL! Our class goal is to not talk at inappropriate times… AND we want to have some more fun with the Halloween holiday, so I might have a project or 2 for everyone if they can reach that class goal! ; )

OUR FOOD DRIVE HAS STARTED! New goals posted!

Food-Drive-Box-of-Canned-GoodsOur class has decided to set some goals for our food drive. Here they are:

200 cans– bring a stuffed animal day
250 cans– an extra art project
300 cans– an afternoon “Read In”
301+ cans– Pizza Party

We’re at 131 cans as of Friday, Oct. 27! Thanks for all your support… we’re excited to help the hungry!!

We are collecting food for those less fortunate. 1 in 5 kids in Utah goes hungry everyday. That’s just devastating to think about!!  Please send as much as you can. (Cans only.) I believe we will be collecting for the next 2 weeks. There are also rewards for the grade and class that collects the most… so of course, we’re up for that!! We want to help all those families… thanks for your support!!
