Homework for January 9th-13th

*ALL MATH, SPELLING AND TIMED READING FLUENCY HOMEWORK IS DUE THURSDAY, JANUARY 12TH.
***BECAUSE THIS IS THE LAST WEEK OF THE 2ND QUARTER, I WILL NOT BE ACCEPTING ANY LATE WORK THE WEEK OF JANUARY 17TH- 20TH. AGAIN, THE QUARTER WILL HAVE ENDED AND ALL GRADES FOR THE 2ND QUARTER WILL HAVE BEEN ENTERED.

**ALL READING MINUTES NEED TO BE RECORDED ON YOUR STUDENTS READING LOG SUNDAY JANUARY 15TH, but will NOT be recorded until Tuesday, January 17th due to the school being closed Monday for Martin Luther King Day.

There are 7 components to this weeks homework:
1- My Math Worksheets: 5-7

2-Math Timings: Subtracting from 6
3- Reading Fluency: Story #6
4-Reading Minutes: (20 minutes/day or a total of 100 minutes/week)
***WEEKLY READING MINUTES MUST BE RECORDED BY SUNDAY FOR CREDIT (Checked Monday). LATE RECORDED MINUTES WILL NOT BE RECORDED FOR CREDIT. 
***PLEASE, PLEASE REMEMBER TO RECORD YOUR STUDENT’S MINUTES FOR OUR LIBRARY CHALLENGE TOO. SO far I have only had two students do this…I would love our class to get the SUPER COOL prize for reading the most in first grade. 1-My Math Homework for the Week:
Monday Lesson 5: Make 10 to Subtract
Tuesday Lesson 6: Use Relates Facts to Add
Wednesday Lesson 7: Fact Families
Thursday Lesson : ALL Homework Due Today!
 
  • Worksheets: Please complete every other problem (alternate between evens and odds so your child gets practice doing story problems AND “Vocabulary Check”/ “Test Practice” problems each week).  If your child wants to do every problem they are certainly free to do so! 🙂 Please check your child’s answers for accuracy!

2-Math Timings: Subtract from 6
  • Practice your fluency timing repeatedly:  Record your best time and score each day. [By the end of first grade, the target goal is to finish all 25 problems in 1 minute and 15 seconds, with 90% accuracy (23 out of 25 problems correct).]  Remember if your student Click here for extra timings: Fluency Timings
Helpful Hint:  Use counters (pennies, buttons, macaroni, etc.) if needed to model subtraction  or draw pictures (e.g. simple circles) and cross off the number being subtracted. Count backwards when subtracting 1, 2, or 3: Start with the bigger number and count backwards (Example: 3 – 2.  Snap your finger and say “3″ and count backwards 2 times: say 3 (snap)…2…1).


3- One Minute Reading Fluency: Lesson #6  Please print from this link: Phonics Fluency Stories
This daily one-minute timed fluency reading will help your student become a fluent reader.  It will also count as reading minutes.  Time your student for one minute. Record the number of words they were able to read CORRECTLY in one minute. Again, Please make sure you are ONLY recording the CORRECT  WORDS READ in that minute

Want to save paper?  Have your student read the passage online, then simply record their CORRECT words read/minute each day on their spelling homework form.

4- Reading: 20 minutes/day or a total of 100 minutes/week:
RECORD YOUR READING MINUTES ON THE  “BOOK IT”  READING LOG located in your student’s green folder.

***There are several sources for reading: “Reading for all Learners” also known as”Baggy Books,” books from the school library, books from home, as well as the public library. Students may also use our online reading program Raz-Kids

  • I know you are probably SSSSSOOOO tired of seeing this “BLIP” about reading fluency and comprehension, but I can’t stress it enough!!!
Understanding what you are reading is just as important as being a fluent reader and vice versa!!! PLEASE use these Re-Tell Ropes whenever you are reading with your student checking for understanding.  THIS  HELPS STUDENTS PREPARE FOR OUR  LANGUAGE ARTS WORK  AND ALL COMPREHENSION TESTING.

We will BEGIN DIBELS TESTING Monday, January 9th. The Mid-Year DIBLES TESTING has a 1 minutes timed reading passage that students will be required to read, then, they must  RECALL/RE-TELL what the story was about in the formats below. While they have been reading passages as a part of their homework, the passages they will be tested on are much harder and require recalled details.

5. Phonics and High Frequency Words

Here is the link to print our weekly spelling homework form:  New Weekly Spelling Homework**Remember if you choose  not to print off and use this form you need to make sure your student is writing each word and the sentence daily on paper, and that all writing is nice and  neat as well as organized like the form, and that the papers get turned in on Friday for credit.

Our spelling test will be Friday, November 9th.

The spelling words with sentence are worth 18 points/day this week. The spelling test will be given Friday.
***Your student needs to write EACH SPELLING WORD ONCE in the 1st 5 boxes and the 3 Phonics words in the following 3 boxes.
There should be plenty of space to write the sentence once on the 2 lines provided at the bottom of each page on the form.
**I have noticed that there have been students that aren’t following these required guidelines and are therefore your student is NOT GETTING FULL
CREDIT!

  **This week we will be talking about, and doing some activities centered around Dr. Martin Luther
     King. Please talk with your student about what is important to them and what they wish/dream the
     future to be like, then have them respond to this post.
