*ALL MATH, SPELLING AND TIMED READING FLUENCY HOMEWORK IS DUE FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 3RD.

**ALL READING MINUTES NEED TO BE RECORDED ON YOUR STUDENTS READING LOG SUNDAY , FEBRUARY 5TH.
***READING MINUTES ALSO NEED TO BE RECORDED SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 5th FOR THE LIBRARY CHALLENGE.   IT REALLY IS SO SIMPLE AND  TAKES LESS THAT 2 MINUTES TO COMPLETE.

There are 7 components to this weeks homework:
1- My Math Worksheets: 5-8
***Last chance to turn in My Math worksheets 1-4
2-Math Timings: Subtracting from 9
3- Reading Fluency: Story #9
4-Reading Minutes: (20 minutes/day or a total of 100 minutes/week)
***WEEKLY READING MINUTES MUST BE RECORDED BY SUNDAY FOR CREDIT (Checked Monday). LATE RECORDED MINUTES WILL NOT BE RECORDED FOR CREDIT. 
***PLEASE, PLEASE REMEMBER TO RECORD YOUR STUDENT’S MINUTES FOR OUR LIBRARY CHALLENGE TOO. SO far I have only had two students do this…I would love our class to get the SUPER COOL prize for reading the most in first grade. 1-My Math Homework for the Week:
Monday Lesson 5: Add Tens and Ones with Regrouping
Tuesday Lesson 6: Subtract Tens
Wednesday Lesson 7: Count Back by Tens
Thursday Lesson 8: Relate Addition and Subtraction by Tens
  • Worksheets: Please complete every other problem (alternate between evens and odds so your child gets practice doing story problems AND “Vocabulary Check”/ “Test Practice” problems each week).  If your child wants to do every problem they are certainly free to do so! 🙂 Please check your child’s answers for accuracy!

2-Math Timings: Subtract from 9
  • Practice your fluency timing repeatedly:  Record your best time and score each day. [By the end of first grade, the target goal is to finish all 25 problems in 1 minute and 15 seconds, with 90% accuracy (23 out of 25 problems correct).]  Remember if your student Click here for extra timings: Fluency Timings
Helpful Hints:  Students should know all the ways to “Make a Ten”.  (0 + 10, 1 + 9, 2 + 8, 3 + 7, 4 + 6, 5 +5).  Using these facts will help them find the related subtraction facts when “Subtracting From 10″.  Help them see the connection.  If I know 4 + 6 = 10, then 10 – 6 = 4 and 10 – 4 = 6. 
Count backwards when subtracting 1, 2, or 3: Start with the bigger number and count backwards (Example: 8 – 3.  Snap your finger and say “8″ and count backwards 3 times: say 8 (snap)…7…6…5).  For numbers close to each other on the number line (i.e. 9-7), picture how close they are on the number line (i.e. 9 and 7 are 2 “frog hops” away from each other).  Some facts just need to be memorized! 


3- One Minute Reading Fluency: Lesson #9 Please print from this link: Phonics Fluency Stories
This daily one-minute timed fluency reading will help your student become a fluent reader.  It will also count as reading minutes.  Time your student for one minute. Record the number of words they were able to read CORRECTLY in one minute. Again, Please make sure you are ONLY recording the CORRECT  WORDS READ in that minute

Want to save paper?  Have your student read the passage online, then simply record their CORRECT words read/minute each day on their spelling homework form.

4- Reading: 20 minutes/day or a total of 100 minutes/week:
RECORD YOUR READING MINUTES ON THE  “BOOK IT”  READING LOG located in your student’s green folder.

***There are several sources for reading: “Reading for all Learners” also known as”Baggy Books,” books from the school library, books from home, as well as the public library. Students may also use our online reading program Raz-Kids

Please READ, READ, READ with your student, but more importantly, have them be the ones doing the reading to you. They will only become better readers whey THEY are the ones doing the reading at this point. If your student really struggles with reading, try this “FUN GAME.” Pick several words that they will read 100% of the time in the book(s) AND passages they are reading. Write them on a sticky note, and have them put a tally mark on the sticky note each time they read that particular read. This will give them another visual reminder of how important those words are. 

      **Help your student sound out ALL CVC (consonant/vowel/consonant)  words.
      **Help them find words within words when they get to a word that “looks long and scary.”
      **They NEED/SHOULD BE able to recognize and read words with vowel teams /ee/, /ea/, /oa/, and /ai/ since we have been working on them since November. Ask them what the rule is when they get to a word that has a vowel team in it.  Our chant: When vowel teams go a walking, the first one does the talking.
     **They should be getting very familiar with CVCe words too! We call them “Tickle E Words.” Have your student tell you why.

Knowing basic reading strategies and rules will help your student’s reading fluency and comprehension. From now on, o
ur fluency passages will be increasing in difficulty, so if your student doesn’t have a good grasp on these few basic reading concepts, I would recommend spending some time on these for now as well as continuing with the re-tell ropes.

5. Phonics and High Frequency Words
High Frequency Words
Here is the link to print our weekly spelling homework form:  New Weekly Spelling Homework **Remember if you choose  not to print off and use this form you need to make sure your student is writing each word and the sentence daily on paper, and that all writing is nice and  neat as well as organized like the form, and that the papers get turned in on Friday for credit.

Our spelling test will be Friday, February 3rd.

The spelling words with sentence are worth 17 points/day this week. The spelling test will be given Friday.
***Your student needs to write EACH SPELLING WORD ONCE in the 1st 5 boxes and the 3 Phonics words in the following 3 boxes.
There should be plenty of space to write the sentence once on the 2 lines provided at the bottom of each page on the form.
**I have noticed that there have been students not following these required guidelines and, are therefore, NOT GETTING FULL
CREDIT!
