6-Image result for free valentines day clip artOur Valentines Day Party will be on Tuesday, February 14th from  1:30-2:40. Our class is responsible for the 1st grade treats this time.

I AM GOING TO PICK UP  SOME COOKIES AND JUICE FOR ALL THE KIDDOS,  SO WE ARE GOOD FOR THE PARTY TREATS, however, there is always room for extra helping hands  with the crafts and games.

We will have CLASS ROTATIONS as in the past, however there will only be two rotations this time instead of 5. Now, our students will have more time to enjoy the games, crafts and treats. The kids will consume their treats in the rooms that the games are in.

Stores are now stocked and ready for Valentine’s Day.  To help you properly prepare for our in class celebrations, here are the Quest guidelines in regards to Valentine’s:

“Per Quest’s wellness policy, all food in the classroom must be pre-approved. Furthermore, parental permission is also required for students to consume food during class parties. Due to this policy—as in years past—student Valentines cannot contain edible items. Suggestions for nonfood Valentines include pencils, erasers, bubbles, stickers, etc. Please note that such items, including Valentine cards, are in no way required.”

I had a parent ask a really great question today…Do the kids need to make a Valentines Day box/bag, at home?  Here’s what I typically do…The morning of Tuesday, February 14th, students will be decorating their own Valentines Day bags (which I provide) then, when we get back from lunch, they will pass out their cards. The bags are super cute plus my students have a blast making them…The best part is… you don’t have the hassle of making one at home YEAH!!!!

I have decided to simplify the treat aspect, and just go by some yummy cookies and punch…Yes, even though I wasn’t to keen on the cookie idea, it’s easy and I know the kids will be happy with it.

I am still looking for volunteers. Our class will be split up between the four other classes so that will be a super fun change. The games and craft are sure to please, so all in all, it should be a fun filled day!

EXTRA, EXTRA Read All About It!!!

We are smack in the middle of double-digit addition, and it is proving to be very difficult for those who do not have their math facts memorized.  Next week we’ll be starting double-image_thumb[10]digit subtraction, which seems to be doubly difficult when math facts are not memorized!

If you find that your child doesn’t know his/her math facts, please work with him/her at home to achieve memorization.  We are not at a point in the year where we can continue going back to re-teaching memorization strategies during class – we have much, much more to learn!

You may choose to memorize math facts as your “math activity” practice for the upcoming weeks of homework.  Please utilize the following links to create flashcards and work on memorization of facts up to 20:
I’ve had parents ask what rate their children should be reading at, or how many “Words Per Minute” their student should be able to read (this includes their nightly reading fluency timings), so I thought it might be helpful to post some information regarding fluency1reading fluency.

Here are some answers:

1. At what rate should my child be reading for this point in the school year?
At this point in the school year, your child should be able to read about 70 Words Per Minute (WPM), accurately, according to several sources, including the Reading A-Z guidelines.  Some guidelines recommend only 53 WPM for first grade and others recommend as high as 82 WPM by the end of first grade, but in my experience, if your child reads at or above 70 WPM, he or she will likely do well on the final DIBELS test of the year.

2. But isn’t it just as important for my child to comprehend his/her reading?
Yes, of course it is!  Reading comprehension is most definitely as important as fluency!  That is why we focus a lot on re-telling the story after a timing and we work on learning comprehension strategies here in class.

It is important to know, though, that there is a very strong correlation between reading fluency and reading comprehension, which means that those students who read at a more fluent rate are likely comprehending more of their reading, too.  When your child works to build his reading fluency, his reading comprehension will likely increase, too.

3. What if my child is struggling with becoming a fluent reader or achieving a higher Words-Per-Minute rate?  What can be done?
Unfortunately, there is no “magic bullet” for building reading fluency.  There are, however, 10, and only ten, very simple ways to build fluency:

10-ways-to-become-a-better-readerTruthfully, the best way to boost your reading skills is to….read!  Your child needs to be exposed to the task of decoding words on a very consistent basis.  Of course, we spend much of our school day reading, however, research has shown how incredibly important it is to reinforce this skill at home – every day.  Encourage your young reader to read as much as possible, and remember: consistency is the key.  Build a consistent reading time into your day and stick to it – every day!

COME VOLUNTEER AND PARTY WITH US ON VALENTINES DAY!!!

Image result for free valentines day clip art

Our Valentines Day Party will be on Tuesday, February 14th from  1:30-2:45. Our class is responsible for the 1st grade treats this time.

  • I need Parent Volunteers to help with the possible creation, and distribution, of the treats  as well as coming up with what that treat will be. I would prefer that the treat NOT BE cookies or cupcakes. There are students in first grade who have allergies to peanuts, gluten and milk.

  • We will still have rotations as in the past, however there will only be two rotations this time instead of 5. Our hope is that by having only 2 rotations, students will have more time to enjoy the games, crafts and treats. The kids will consume the treats in the rooms that the games are in so keep that in mind when thinking about a “Treat Idea. It could be as simple as a box of candy hearts…
  • Please let me know if you are willing to party with us, have any fun ideas treat ideas, ( I will use money we have from our party fund to pay for the treats) no later the Wednesday, February 8th.
  • Stores are now stocked and ready for Valentine’s Day.  To help you properly prepare for our in class celebrations, here are the Quest guidelines in regards to Valentine’s

I LOVE MATH!!

1-My Math Homework for the Week:
Monday Lesson 5: Add Tens and Ones with Regrouping
Tuesday Lesson 6: Subtract Tens
Wednesday Lesson 7: Count Back by Tens
Thursday Lesson 8: Relate Addition and Subtraction by Tens
  • Worksheets: Please complete every other problem (alternate between evens and odds so your child gets practice doing story problems AND “Vocabulary Check”/ “Test Practice” problems each week).  If your child wants to do every problem they are certainly free to do so! 🙂 Please check your child’s answers for accuracy!

  • Practice your fluency timing repeatedly:  Record your best time and score each day. Helpful Hints:  Students should know all the ways to “Make a Ten”.  (0 + 10, 1 + 9, 2 + 8, 3 + 7, 4 + 6, 5 +5).  Using these facts will help them find the related subtraction facts when “Subtracting From 10″.  Help them see the connection.  If I know 4 + 6 = 10, then 10 – 6 = 4 and 10 – 4 = 6.
Count backwards when subtracting 1, 2, or 3: Start with the bigger number and count backwards (Example: 8 – 3.  Snap your finger and say “8″ and count backwards 3 times: say 8 (snap)…7…6…5).  For numbers close to each other on the number line (i.e. 9-7), picture how close they are on the number line (i.e. 9 and 7 are 2 “frog hops” away from each other).  Some facts just need to be memorized!

3- One Minute Reading Fluency: Lesson #9 Please print from this link: Phonics Fluency Stories

Please READ, READ, READ with your student, but more importantly, have them be the ones doing the reading to you. They will only become better readers whey THEY are the ones doing the reading at this point. If your student really struggles with reading, try this “FUN GAME.” Pick several words that they will read 100% of the time in the book(s) AND passages they are reading. Write them on a sticky note, and have them put a tally mark on the sticky note each time they read that particular read. This will give them another visual reminder of how important those words are.

**Help your student sound out ALL CVC (consonant/vowel/consonant)  words.
**Help them find words within words when they get to a word that “looks long and scary.”
**They NEED/SHOULD BE able to recognize and read words with vowel teams /ee/, /ea/, /oa/, and /ai/ since we have been working on them since November. Ask them what the rule is when they get to a word that has a vowel team in it.  Our chant: When vowel teams go a walking, the first one does the talking.
**They should be getting very familiar with CVCe words too! We call them “Tickle E Words.” Have your student tell you why.

Knowing basic reading strategies and rules will help your student’s reading fluency and comprehension. From now on, o
ur fluency passages will be increasing in difficulty, so if your student doesn’t have a good grasp on these few basic reading concepts, I would recommend spending some time on these for now as well as continuing with the re-tell ropes.
