Mission K9 Rescue Misson Service Project
Last Friday we attended a special Veteran’s Day Assembly with the Crismer’s and their war dog Mazzie from Mission K-9 Rescue. We learned about the sacrifices many dogs are making to protect the lives of our soldiers. Unfortunately, these dogs are left behind after their work is done. Mission K-9 Rescue is striving to Rescue, Reunite, Re-Home, Rehabilita te and Repair any retired working dog that has served mankind in some capacity.
This year for one of our service learning projects we will be collecting coins to donate to Mission K-9 Rescue.
As a First Grade we will be learning that everyone can serve and help others through stories such as “The Lion and the Mouse”. Though our children may be young, they too can make an important difference and our small contributions of a coin here and a few coins there will truly add up to something great.
We are also learning about financial literacy principles; for example, we are learning about the principle of saving and we are learning that, to earn money, one must work. We are encouraging our students to do extra jobs at home for family or friends to earn coins to add to our Mission K-9 Rescue fund.

Library Day and Library Reading Challenge
Yeah!!! Tomorrow is library day.
Please make sure your student comes with their library book so they can check out a new book. Also, I added a link to for the “Library Reading Challenge” to our class blog.
Last year we were neck to neck with Mrs. Dunmeyer’s class and then, at the very end took second place…I would love for our class to be the first grade winner this year! Yes, I can be a little competitive, but it’s such a great challenge with a fun reward at the end right? Please help our class out by adding your weekly reading minutes. It won’t take but a minute or two…
WHERE IN THE WORLD WILL READING TAKE YOU?”

WHERE IN THE WORLD WILL READING TAKE YOU?”
This year for the library’s reading challenge, we will submit reading minutes to travel across the continents. At the end of the year one class per grade will win the fabulous prize for the most reading minutes. In addition, the student(s) with the most reading minutes will qualify for a prize.
What is your role in this reading challenge? Simply click on the “Library Reading Challenge” tab on our class blog and complete the online form each week. Because these reading minutes will only be available to the librarian, you will still need to complete our regular reading log to receive homework credit for reading.

Who Saw the Supermoon?
You won’t regret looking for the moon this coming Sunday for your Moon Journal because we’re about to see a record-breaking supermoon! The moon will rise in the east on Sunday, November 13 at 5:04 PM and set in the west on November 14 at 7:06 AM. The best views usually occur when the moon is sitting closer to the horizon because trees, buildings, and other foreground objects create a moon illusion and it looks especially large. Read more about it here:

I Love To Read!
3- One Minute Reading Fluency. Lesson #2 ONLY from this link: Phonics Fluency Stories
This daily one-minute timed fluency reading will help your student become a fluent reader. It will also count as reading minutes. Time your student for one minute. Record the number of words they were able to read CORRECTLY in one minute.
*Want to save paper? Have your student read the passage online, then simply record their CORRECT words read/minute each day on their spelling homework form.
4- Reading: 20 minutes/day or a total of 100 minutes/week:
RECORD YOUR READING MINUTES ON THE “BOOK IT” READING LOG located in your student’s green folder.
***There are several sources for reading: “Reading for all Learners” also known as”Baggy Books,” books from the school library, books from home, as well as the public library. Students may also use our online reading program Raz-Kids. Our class Raz-Kids login is: dvella0 (That’s a zero)
***IMPORTANT BAGGIE BOOK REMINDER… Replacement of any lost or damaged books will be the responsibility of the student/family. Please take care of them.
Books are to be returned daily in the plastic bag, then, placed inside their green homework folder. In order for your student to pass off each book, they must have fewer than 3 mistakes/book. They must also have a parent, guardian, or volunteer signature on the reading log.
Don’t forget about reading comprehension! Understanding what you are reading is just as important as being a fluent reader!!! PLEASE use these Re-Tell Ropes whenever you are reading with your student checking for understanding. THIS HELPS STUDENTS PREPARE FOR OUR LANGUAGE ARTS WORK ON FRONT ROW AND DIBELS TEST COMPREHENSION.
