Homework for the Week of December 7th-11th

For this week’s homework, there are 5 components required:

1. Reading (20-30 minutes every day!)
2. Word Sorts
3. Spelling
4. Math
5. Sentence

Each week, print out the HOMEWORK FORM (CLICK HERE), which is found here or under the “Homework Form” tab above. If you would like to reduce the number of necessary printed papers, you may choose to print only page 1 of the Homework Form and use any blank paper for Tuesday’s Writing Sort and Thursday’s Glue Sort (see below).
  • This form does NOT need to be printed or turned in for credit during weeks that we are doing only READING homework.  Simply initialing the form that comes home with your child’s Book Buddy is sufficient during those weeks.

A Reading for All Learners (Book Buddy) leveled book will be sent home with your child DAILY. Please have your child read the book (or one story from the books that contain more than one story) at least three times and then sign the included form. You may supplement your child’s reading using books at home, library books, etc. to fulfill the minimum requirement of 20-30 minutes of reading per day.

Each week, print your student’s assigned Word Sort by clicking on the appropriate link below.  Use the Word Sort for the following activities:
  • Monday: Print, cut, and sort your words with an adult and explain this week’s rule. Sort each word under the correct guide word. Some guide words have a C or V combination on them – C stands for consonant and V stands for vowel.
  • Tuesday: Practice the sort and write it (using the grid on page 2 of the Homework Form).
  • Wednesday: Blind Sort (Lay down the guide words and then read the rest of the words aloud without showing them to your child. Your child must indicate where the word goes without seeing it.
  • Thursday: Sort and glue (sort the words and glue them using the grid on page 3 of the Homework Form).
important-notice-hiALL STUDENTS WERE RE-ASSESSED USING THE “WORDS THEIR WAY” PROGRAM ASSESSMENT.  MANY HAVE BEEN RE-ASSIGNED INTO DIFFERENT WORD SORT GROUPS, SO PLEASE CHECK FOR YOUR CHILD’S NAME TO BE SURE THAT YOU ARE PRINTING THE CORRECT WORD SORT! THANK YOU!

A Special Visitor!

We had a visitor, Byron, from Lotus Park Assisted Living, come to read books to our first grade today!  We loved Byron right from the start – with his big, bright smile and Kris Kringle-like beard, Byron was an instant hit!

Lotus Park Assisted Living is our first-grade community partner.  We will be doing a couple service projects for them this year and we will be inviting the veterans from Lotus Park Assisted Living to our patriotic performance in the spring.

Scholastic Book Orders – Order EARLY This Month!

Scholastic
Another Scholastic catalogue was sent home with your child today.  I just wanted to let you know that I will be placing the Scholastic Book Order much, much earlier this month so that you will be able to receive your books before Christmas break!   If you place an order after this time, you will still receive it, of course, but it may not be received until after we return from the break.

If you are ordering books for a gift, please let me know and I will allow you to come pick them up in the classroom so they can remain a surprise.

Please have all online orders in by this Friday, December 7th!

If you are ordering online at scholastic.com, our Class Activation Code is NL9MM.
Thank you!

Please Use the “Daily Low Temperature” as a Guideline When Dressing Your Child for School!

Hello, Fabulous Parents!

We have had some bitter cold temperatures right before school and during morning recesses lately, and I am a little concerned about some of the cold kiddos I have seen!  Most kids are appropriately dressed, but some kids have very little outerwear and have even expressed to me how cold they are!

Here are a few things to bear in mind when deciding on outerwear for school:
  • It is often well below the daily high temperature when the children are waiting outside for school to start and during morning recess.  Please do not use the daily Freezinghigh temperature as a guideline for choosing outerwear!  Try to imagine yourself standing outside in line for 5-10 minutes in the early morning frost and imagine what you’d like to be wearing!
  • We only stay inside for recess (and before school) when the temperature is below 20 degrees.  So, that means that your child will often be out in below-freezing temperatures! Please dress accordingly.  The students’ cubbies are plenty big enough to house all manner of outerwear, including hats, gloves, scarves, boots, etc.
I absolutely adore your children and I want them to enjoy their recesses as much as possible!  We did have an anonymous parent donate some hats and mittens for any children whose families may be experiencing financial strain; I am unsure of who may have a need, so please let me know by e-mail if you have a need for a hat or mittens.  Thank you so much!

Wanted: A Small Classroom Christmas Tree

TreeI was going to purchase a small table-top Christmas tree for our classroom, but then it occurred to me that there may be some parents who have an extra that they might be trying to get rid of.  If anyone has an extra Christmas tree that they would like to donate to our classroom, we would love to have it!  I would prefer a smallish table-top Christmas tree, since space in our classroom is limited.

Thank you very much!

Needed: Cardboard Tubes (wrapping paper rolls, paper towel rolls, etc.)

Hi, Parents!

We are doing a S.T.E.M.  (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) project in December for which we need many, many cardboard tubes, such as paper towel rolls and wrapping paper rolls. Rather than throwing out used cardboard rolls during your Thanksgiving festivities, please consider dropping them into your child’s backpack. Thank you!  Please send any donations in to class with your child by Friday, December 10th.  Thank you very much!
