Welcome Back!

I hope you all had a wonderful break and holiday! I am excited to start our new adventures in 2016!  I really missed my class and I am excited to get back! This week will be very busy as we are almost half way through the school year. Can you believe it!? We will be working on text dependent writing from non-fiction text, finishing up main idea, and learning about fables. We also will be working HARD to get our multiplication facts down. We will be finishing up 6′s, 7′s, and 8′s this week so please have your child work on them at home as well.  Our multiplication madness party is February 14th, which is coming up fast. We set a goal at the beginning to have everyone pass off their 0-10s. We would love any help we can get to reach that goal! Thank you for support!

Diversity Quilt

From our Librarian Mrs. Anderson,

Dear Parents:

Here in the library we have been discussing Global Literacy as a part of our STEM integration, basically explaining to your students that there is a big, wide world around them and how can they become more connected to it. We would like to explore Quest Academy’s diversity within our students by doing the following activity:  A Diversity Quilt. Students were sent home with a colored square which will become part of our “quilt.” We are asking that you work with your student and share something about your family’s culture, such as:

  • something you celebrate together
  • something you enjoy doing together
  • something that represents your family
Examples could be:
  • flags from where your family is from
  • family crests
  • Photographs of places visited
  • Words describing your family’s heritage
You can use crayons, markers, pens, or colored pencils to create your family’s representation. If you would like to see an example of a Diversity Quilt to get more ideas you can go to  kidworldcitizen.org
I am very excited about this project and I cannot wait to display the “quilt” showcasing the Quest community.
The quilt squares are due back Friday January 8th. Once all the squares have been collected an email will be sent out to let you know where you can come and see the quilt.
Parents, have fun with this project with your students, this is a great opportunity for them to learn about their heritage and be proud of who they are.

Thank you,
Nicole Anderson

Grinch Party

I’m sure you’ve all heard about our Grinch focus this month. We are spending lots of time talking about kindness and showing love to others.  IT has been awesome to see the students work extra hard to be super caring. To wrap things up in December, we will be having our Grinch Party next Friday, December 18th (with the entire third grade).  We will watch the movie “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” together in the gym.  The students will be given sugar popcorn (colored green) during the party.  We will also be giving the students “Grinch Pills” at the party (green Sixlets). PLEASE DO NOT tell your child about the treats we are having so we can surprise them. :) If you DO NOT want your child to eat the sugar popcorn or “pills”, please let me know.  December 18th is a Dollar Dress Down Day, and we thought it would be fun for the kids to dress up like a “Who” or the Grinch.  Let’s be creative and have some fun celebrating our hearts growing 3 TIMES this month.

Sage Interim Math Testing

I hope everyone is having a great week!  WE are having SAGE Interim Math Testing next week.  The SAGE Interim testing is giving us a baseline to show improvement from December to May.  This is the first time your children have seen this test.  It’s very good for them to get comfortable to the way the questions are asked and how t use the tools on the computer. Please contact me if you have any question.  Thanks for your support!

Multiplication Madness

Multiplication Madness Pic
We are hitting multiplication really hard in math right now. Starting (Thursday, November 19th) we will begin Multiplication Madness! Please start drilling and multiplying the multiplication facts with them over Thanksgiving Break. The students are expected to drill their math facts at home also. The students have to pass off their 0′s to 10′s for a required grade. Every student will be given 10 problems to pass off in one minute. Multiplication facts are a huge part of the third grade math core curriculum. The students will have to spend time at home working on these facts in order to pass them off in the time table we have set. The students will have the opportunity to pass off their multiplication facts as many times as they can before the celebration. Our Multiplication Madness Banana Split Celebration will take place on February 14th from 2:00-3:00.

**During Thanksgiving Break and Winter Break, students will need to spend time studying multiplication facts so they are prepared. Weekends are a great time to work on multiplication facts (since there is no homework).**

Each part of the Banana Split is one of the multiplication facts that needs to be passed off. You will get that part of the Banana Split ONLY if you pass off that actual fact.
