New Poems for April. This has been so fun!
This month I am asking students to memorize at least one of the attached poems to be performed in front of the class before May 1st. This is a great opportunity to work on our fluency, phrasing, and performing skills. Students are welcome to memorize and perform as many poems as they would like. I will be paying class money for each successfully performed. I will be sending home a hard copy with each student. Feel free to click on the link April Poems or the picture to view online.

Reading Homework

Our goal is to have student’s read 20 minutes per night.

Math Homework
Each student will need to get onto www.reflexmath.com (access under student links on the Quest website, or on the blogs sidebar under Homework Links) and complete their “green light” (the middle has to be green) Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday (3 sessions). Students have practiced logging in the last week but, just in case they don’t remember, the class username is “shark″ and all passwords are “rams”.  If students do not complete Reflex at home they will complete it during recess time.

Grinch Party and White Elephant Gift Exchange

On Friday, December 14th, the third grade will be having a Grinch Party.  We will be watching the movie, How The Grinch Stole Christmas as a grade.  We will be serving “Grinch Popcorn” (sugared popcorn colored green) during the party.  Please let us know if you have a problem with your child eating this.  Since this day is a Free Dress Down day, we thought it would be fun for the students to dress up like the Grinch or a Who from the story/movie.  Any child that would like to do that sure can.  It will add to the fun for sure!

Our class will also be doing a White Elephant gift exchange party. Please send your child with a wrapped present on or before the 14th.  This can be something from around your house, a Dollar Store purchase, a toy you have lying around, something funny to make us laugh (Those are my favorite.), etc.  Please DO NOT go out and spend a bunch of money on this gift.  That will not be necessary.  Let me know if you need me to have a gift ready for your child.

Halloween

If this is your first year at Quest, please review our wellness policy regarding food in the classroom. As Halloween is approaching, parents often ask if their children can bring candy to share for their classroom Halloween party. According to our wellness policy, students are not allowed to bring treats to share. Information regarding Halloween party treats will be given to parents one week prior to the party. All parents are required to give permission for their students to consume treats during these activities.

Please note that costumes should be modest and without blood or gore. Though students may paint their faces, masks and weapons are not allowed. Anything that depicts violence is banned (knives, guns, swords, spears, etc.). If you have questions about costume accessories, please contact us. Just to reiterate, no blood, either depicted on the costume or in makeup, is allowed.

Food Permissions for 2018-2019

3rd Grade does a ton of fun activities throughout the year, some of the activities include food. We thought it would be better to send home a comprehensive permission slip that you would only have to fill out one form for food. There may be a few exceptions along the way, but this is the bulk of it. 🙂

Apple Witches

***I know some parents already let me know that they would be able to sew dress. I would still appreciate the bottom part of this letter returned with that info, just in case things have changed.
***I will be sending home a hard copy of this letter on Monday. Look for it in your student’s backpack!

Dear Parents,

Your third grader is in the process of making an apple witch.  For this project, your student needs to bring a few items from home.  If you have any problems providing the materials needed, please email me as soon as possible.  If we do not hear from you, we will not have extra materials available for your child.  Your student will need these materials by Wednesday, October 24th (all put together). If he/she brings them before then, great.

Attached is a pattern for the dress, gloves and a hat.  Please have all of these items precut and the dress sewn together, leaving a very small space open (just big enough for a skewer to fit through) for the neck. To make the hat, just roll the hat top into a cone, and glue it in the middle of the hat brim.

Place all parts in a baggie and label them with your child’s name.  Following these steps will save A LOT OF TIME!  Note: If you cannot sew the dress, please send it precut by the 16th of October and we have some fabulous moms who will help us with sewing.

Materials

  • 1 Square foot of any material (Cut out the using the dress pattern)
  • 1 to 2 Small pieces of felt (Any color you want to match your material).  Use the glove pattern and cut out 4.  You may use the same piece, or a different color to cut out the hat. Making the hat (with hot glue) ahead of time is strongly suggested.
  • 1 six-inch stick or twig from a tree for a broomstick.  Please do not send a dowel. It should be about the size that was shown in class to students.

I will provide your student with yarn for hair and the needed pipe cleaner for the arms.  Upon completion of this portion of the project, your student will be writing about the character they have made.  We will then send the apple witch home with a fun story about it.   This project will store for many years to come.

We will be dressing our apple witches on Wednesday, October 24th, starting at 1:30.  If you can help us that day, please sign the note below and return to school as soon as possible.

Thanks,

Miss Young
