Sage Interim Math Testing

I hope everyone is having a great week!  WE are having SAGE Interim Math Testing next week.  The SAGE Interim testing is giving us a baseline to show improvement from December to May.  This is the first time your children have seen this test.  It’s very good for them to get comfortable to the way the questions are asked and how t use the tools on the computer. Please contact me if you have any question.  Thanks for your support!

Multiplication Madness

Multiplication Madness Pic
We are hitting multiplication really hard in math right now. Starting (Thursday, November 19th) we will begin Multiplication Madness! Please start drilling and multiplying the multiplication facts with them over Thanksgiving Break. The students are expected to drill their math facts at home also. The students have to pass off their 0′s to 10′s for a required grade. Every student will be given 10 problems to pass off in one minute. Multiplication facts are a huge part of the third grade math core curriculum. The students will have to spend time at home working on these facts in order to pass them off in the time table we have set. The students will have the opportunity to pass off their multiplication facts as many times as they can before the celebration. Our Multiplication Madness Banana Split Celebration will take place on February 14th from 2:00-3:00.

**During Thanksgiving Break and Winter Break, students will need to spend time studying multiplication facts so they are prepared. Weekends are a great time to work on multiplication facts (since there is no homework).**

Each part of the Banana Split is one of the multiplication facts that needs to be passed off. You will get that part of the Banana Split ONLY if you pass off that actual fact.

Chapter 9 Test

Knowing that this chapter is our most challenging I am sending the tests home with an extra credit option. Every missed problem can earn a half credit back when resubmitted with the correct answer. Students should pay extra attention to the word problems. I have found that drawing a picture is very helpful, as well as finding the important guide words like times, in each, half etc.

I would also like to stress the continuing importance of learning multiplication facts. Though multiplication is not our focus right now, everything in math will be easier if they really have their facts down. We will be doing multiplication with equivalent fractions and with perimeter and area. Students need to be practicing their facts regularly, whether with flashcards, apps, etc.

Multiplication Madness Party

The Multiplication Madness party is next week!! I was really happy to have 5 students move up another number today. All third grade is going to be participating, so we have made assignments for each class, our class is going to be responsible for toppings.
We need:
2 – Squeeze bottles of caramel sauce
2 – Squeeze bottles of chocolate sauce
2 – Squeeze bottles of strawberry sauce
3 – Jars of cherries
7 – Cans of whipped cream
If you would like to donate to the party, please comment below what you would like to bring. Everything can be brought in starting tomorrow except for the whipped cream.

Below is a permission slip for the party:

Word Problems

Just a friendly reminder of our steps! Quite a few students are still struggling with word problems.

Please be doing all four steps when completing word problems!!

1.  Understand

  • Go through and underline or circle numbers and important words*

2.  Plan

  • Decide what strategy you are going to use to solve the problem.
    • Example:  number line, diagram, array, counters, etc.

3.  Solve

  • It is important that you take your time in this step to do it right the first time.

4.  Check your work

  • This step is very important. This is where you try to find computation mistakes.
