Toys and fidget spinners

Parents,
We recently have had a problem with students bringing toys and fidget spinners to school to play with during recess. Please make sure your students are keeping them at home. They are not allowed to have them at school, or at recess, anymore. If I see them, I will be taking them away. Thank you!
Ms. Ferrin

Your child is required to read 20 minutes every night. This could include Raz Kids, reading books at home or our fluency passage. Here is the link to your child’s phonics-fluency-stories sheet. Please print Lesson 28 and have your child read it each night. Time them for 1 minute and have them read as many words as they can. If they get to the bottom they will go back to the top and continue reading until the 1 minute is up. Soon I will have some students doing harder passages based on where they get with reading buddies coming up. This is just to start getting into a routine.

PLEASE make sure your child is bringing their blue folder everyday to school. There are passages in them that are another resource for reading but I am asking that you have them read it at least 3 times a week.

They need to be timed for 1 minute and then using their retell ropes (in back of sheet protector) to tell you as much as they can about the story. Here are homework-fluency-instructions for help.

Here is the word sort to print : 1-28-sheet1

Each week, print your student’s assigned Word Sort by clicking on the appropriate link above.  Use the Word Sort for the following activities:

  • Monday: Print, cut, and sort your words with an adult and explain this week’s rule. Sort each word under the correct guide word.
  • Tuesday: Practice the sort and write it on the back of the homework tracker.
  • Wednesday: Blind Sort (Lay down the guide words and then read the rest of the words aloud without showing them to your child. Your child must indicate where the word goes without seeing it.
  • Thursday: Speed Sort: Time your students three times doing their word sorts and record it on the homework tracker.

House Keeping Things

Water Bottles

water bottleHot Weather + Recess = Thirsty First Graders!  🙂

Please send your child with a water bottle EACH DAY to keep in their cubbies (preferably one that doesn’t spill easily).   One drinking fountain with an entire class of students takes a lot of time and we want to make sure they are getting enough water.

Headphones

HeadphonesWe will begin using computers next week.  If your child has not brought headphones to school yet we encourage you to send them as soon as possible. We use our headphones EVERY SINGLE DAY, often all at the same time, and we do not allow students to borrow other students’ headphones because of liability in case they are broken, etc.

Zoo Field Trip will be September 6th from 9:00am-1:00pm in order for your child to participate they must have permission from the yearly permission slip below. I am missing a few students permission from parents. I will send emails out of who is missing theirs.

Please sign the yearly permission slip CLICK HERE This gives your child permission to participate in all the activities and learning experiences this year. I also can’t stress enough the importance of paying the office the donations for the field trip and parties. We rely on these donations in order for those activities to take place. It is $15 for the year for our field trips and $12 for our class parties. That amount will take care of ALL the activites for the year.

Return blue folders daily.  This is an opportunity for your student to practice being responsible.

Last day of School Important Info!

On Friday the 27th school lunch will not be available.  PLEASE SEND A COLD HOME LUNCH, LABELED WITH YOUR CHILD’S NAME. MICROWAVES WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE!

Field day poster

We are still in need of volunteers to help with field day on Friday anytime between 8:00-1:30. Parents who are able to volunteer can call Rachel Hopkins at (801)389-0965.  This is a great way to get those last minute volunteer hours in.
