Welcome back from Winter Break!  
There will be only reading homework for this week.  Here is the Reading only tracker. 
The only other homework due is on Friday, January 8th, which is the assignment from the library: the “Diversity Quilt” square.

Diversity Quilt Square

1. Use the colored square that was sent home the last week before Winter Break for the assignment.  Use crayons, markers, pens, or colored pencils to  create an image that represents your family.  This could include any of the following:

• Something you celebrate together
• Something you enjoy doing together
• Something that represents your family
• Flags from where your family is from
• Family crest
• Photographs of places visited
• Words describing your family heritage

    2.  Be sure to write your name on the back of the square and  turn it in to our class (not to the library) on Friday, January 8th! 

Tomorrow is FREE dress down day, early out, and our Winter party! HOMEWORK IS DUE! Last homework before break. I will not be handing out new reading passages for over the break, enjoy your time together and don’t worry about reading or any homework!! YAY!

My second attempt was much better than my first. But here are some pictures of the graham cracker houses I need help to make this week. Those of you who said you would be willing to help I would like to send home graham crackers with your student. Please email me if you are still able to help. I will send you home with a box and have you make as many as you can with one box. I think I can get 6 houses out of 1 box.

I simply broke the crackers in half and did four sides and then two for the roof as you can see. 

* If you would like to help but don’t want to do it at home, please email me and I can let you in the school early to help me glue some here at the school. I am usually here between 6:45 and 7am.

Your child is required to read 20 minutes every night. This could include Raz Kids, reading books at home or our fluency passage. Here is the link to your child’s Fluency Recording sheet. Your child has a number click on your child’s number (at the bottom of the spreadsheet) to record their reading. Your child should know their number.

Each week, print your student’s assigned Word Sort by clicking on the appropriate link below.  Use the Word Sort for the following activities:

• Monday: Print, cut, and sort your words with an adult and explain this week’s rule. Sort each word under the correct guide word. Some guide words have a C or V combination on them – C stands for consonant and V stands for vowel. PLEASE write the sort on the back of the homework tracker. 
• Tuesday: Practice the sort and write it on the homework tracker. 
• Wednesday: Blind Sort (Lay down the guide words and then read the rest of the words aloud without showing them to your child. Your child must indicate where the word goes without seeing it.
• Thursday: Speed Sort: Time your students three times doing their word sorts and record it on the homework tracker.

• Study the following “High Frequency Words” using any method you wish in order to prepare for the weekly spelling test on Fridays. There are no review words.
• There is a list of recommended spelling study activities that you can access BY CLICKING HERE for Spelling Word Activities, but, again, you may use any method you wish.

• Complete the My Math homework pages.  Do all the ODD problems. Get on and do Xtra Math practice. Pins are now under homework- usernames and passwords
• Please also practice math facts regularly by utilizing any of the math activities that you can access BY CLICKING HERE for Math Activities.  These math facts activities do not need to be documented for homework credit – they are simply a resource to help you practice math fluency on a regular basis. 

I got permission to do a few fun activities next week which include watching The Polar Express, decorating houses and a party. I need your permisison in order for your child to participate. There is a lot to fill out so please read carefully and mark all options that apply ASAP.

We had a visitor, Miss LaRue, from Lotus Park Assisted Living, come to read books to our first grade today!  We loved Miss LaRue right from the start – with her cheery smile LaRue was an instant success!  She shared with us some Christmas Traditions she had as a little girl who grew up in the Depression Era.  Ask your kiddo’s what she would get on Christmas.  

Lotus Park Assisted Living is our first grade community partner.  We will be doing a couple service projects for them this year and we will be inviting the veterans from Lotus Park Assisted Living to our patriotic performance in the spring.

For homework help tonight here is a Doubles Rap I taught the kids to remember their doubles! If you start it out they should be able to say it for the most part. Here is a cheat sheet to help. While they were doing math today if they would get stuck I would sing the rap for example if they got stuck on 2+2=4 I would say 2+2=___ More! Then they would remember that more rhymes with 4 and could get the answer. For the lesson 5 page they should use the doubles and then add one to it. For some students it helped to write the doubles on top and then remember to add 1. If you need help let me know! Thanks!

The next few weeks before our Winter Break, we will be learning about Holidays around the World. We will be learning about the following different countries. If you have lived in or know about one of the Countries and how they celebrate the Holidays let me know if you are able to come, or have artifacts you would be willing to let me borrow to make this a fun experience for the class.
