Clubs, Field Trip, Survivor!

Goodbye long weekend!  We will all miss you!  Hello countdown to Spring Break, which means we have 6 solid weeks to buckle in and work hard on writing, math, reading skills, STEM, social studies, and sprinkle in some art too.

We need all Field Trip Permission Slips  turned in by Wednesday.  If you are planning to join us, please have your entrance to the movie paid by Wednesday too.

If your child signed up for a Tuesday Club, you should have received an e-mail tonight concerning them starting tomorrow night, other than the Running Club, it will start early March.  There are still a few slots open in the Chimes Club.   The Club Contract may be found here:  Club Agreement

If your child will be staying for the Thursday Dot and Dash Club, please scroll down to the post before this one,  and fill out the form there.

We are starting our Survivor Game and Research project.  Your child will be choosing either a consumer or producer in class and needs to decide what they would like to be.  Please help them in this decision as they will be researching what they choose, creating a presentation about it, and then defending why they should not be voted “off the island” at Tribal Council.  We will be doing research at school and I’m sure there will be some done at home also.  The students will need to log onto the blog Wednesday and fill out the Survivor Google Form on Wednesday.  This form will go live at 3:45.  It will be a first come first serve of choosing.  The student with the earliest timestamp will get the topic.

Homework
We are still focusing on Fractions.  Please draw attention to them as you find them in your child’s life.

Math homework should be at least 3 times a week at least and recorded in the homework reporting page on the blog.  Choose any of the items below to complete homework for the week.

Prodigy
Reflex Math (If they didn’t get their green light at school)
Salute
PIG
Multiplicaton War
Dot Game (Copies are available at school)
Front Row Ed

Reading: 20 minutes at least 5 times this week.  It is imperative that your child is participating in reading practice at home.  Studies have shown that the more words a child read, the better their achievement is in all other areas.   Not only are they given homework points for reading, but they are also given presentation points for being able to stand up and talk about what they read the night before. Reading is worth 10 0points each week.  We will be using what we read in the evening as part of our Seesaw this week.

Spelling Sorts: Sorts are assigned on Monday, so this sort should be the regular sort, allowing you to see what the focus for the week is and should be written after sorting.  Tuesday and Wednesday and Thursday, you get to choose the sorts.  I have told the students that if they choose the speed sort, to save it for a “busy” night as it does not need to be written.   If you have questions, please don’t be afraid to e-mail me.  Sorts are worth 10 points per sort every week.

When we test on Friday, I choose words with the pattern we have learned throughout the week.  I do not always choose words that were in the sort as we are looking for the use of pattern and their ability to use it in any word with that pattern.

Resubscribe, Clubs and Parties, OH MY!

If  you would like to get e-mail alerts of when I post things to the blog, please subscribe or subscribe again.  We had a problem with my server, that has now been fixed, but all of  my contacts were dumped.  I am so sorry, but would love to have everyone sign up again.  Just click on the link at the right.

We are still in need of bowls, and napkins and placemats for the party on Friday.  You don’t need to supply the entire 140 needed,  but I would appreciate anything you can donate.  The other classes parents are taking care of the ice cream, toppings and bananas.

We are ready to start clubs and the information about them is below.  Please note, if your child was a part of the Dash and Dot Competition team, they are not eligible for the Dot and Dash Club.  If your child hasn’t had an opportunity to stay after with Dot and Dash, and Thursday doesn’t work for you, feel free to sign them up for the Tuesday Club, but there is no a guarantee they will be chosen for that club.

January is Over!!!

As most of you know, I don’t really love the cold weather, so I love that we’re one month closer to spring.  I really can’t wait for those nice warm days to come.

We have several things coming up this week and next, so please make sure you read through this entire post.

Food Permission!!!
Please fill out the food permission as soon as possible!
There is nothing worse than having to tell a child you didn’t fill one out and they are not permitted to eat the food in the activity.  If there is an allergy issue, please let me know and together we can come up with something that works for your child.  This one is for the next two weeks.  Please fill it out as soon as possible:

On Thursday we will be leaving immediately after the first bell.  We will have the students come right to our rooms, take roll and board the buses.  All volunteer parents will need to carpool to Salt Lake as we do not have room on the buses for them.  After bringing your child, please figure out carpools and head for the Children’s Theatre.  Your tickets must be purchased before they allow the students in the building.  If you plan on taking your student with you, please note that you are only allowed to transport your student and no other children, even if the other student’s parent is riding with you (It’s a liability issue).   If you have any questions, please send me an e-mail.

Our Multiplication Madness will come to an end in two weeks.  We will celebrate on Friday the 12th at 1:30.  Our class is in charge of all paper products and placemats (hopefully from Chick-Fil-A).  If you would be willing to donate napkins, bowls, spoons or contact Chick-Fil-A for us, please send me an e-mail with how many you can help with.  Let me thank you in advance.

Gala Basket
A parent in Mrs. Lloyd’s class has offered to assemble the basket for the Gala Night and would love to have help from other parents.  We will be doing a “College and All that Jazz” theme.  We are looking for items to be donated that fit this theme.  Please consider what you could possibly do to help make our basket a winner.  (Example:  Last year we had families donate  blankets, pom poms, tickets, shirts etc.)  We would love anything you can think of.

Homework:
We are starting Fractions this week!  I love fractions and there are so many fun things that we get to do with them.

Math homework should be at least 3 times a week at least and recorded in the homework reporting page on the blog.  Choose any of the items below to complete homework for the week.

Conference Thursday and Short Day Friday

Before I forget, Tonight, Monday January 25th, is a FREE movie night at Cinepoint 6, sponsored by POQA. They will be showing the Peanuts Movie at 6:30 sharp, so arrive early, purchase your treats and settle in for a really fun show.  With the movie in mind, I will not be requiring homework tonight.

If your child has not returned their permission slip for the field trip, please do that as soon as possible so we have a count for the Children’s Theatre.

We’ve used Seesaw for a whole week and I think all of the kids and myself are in love with it.  If you haven’t subscribed to your child’s channel, please do, as I think you’ll love it as much as we do.  With that in mind, we also have a new component of Seesaw to introduce, a classroom blog that not only you can see, but anyone you give the address and code word can too.  You can share it Grandmas and Grandpas, Aunts and Uncles or anyone you feel would love seeing our students’ work.  It is password protected and I will send the password home with your student tomorrow.  If I posted it here, it wouldn’t be a secure place for us to share.  On the blog you can either see everything that’s posted or click on your student’s name and you’ll only see their items.  Click here and get ready to be impressed with our trees and Haiku poems:
https://blog.seesaw.me/goldsberrytechies

Thursday is parent teacher night.  If you would like to meet with me please send me an e-mail.  I have 3:15, 3:30, 3:45 and 4:15 available

Friday is a Dollar Dress Down, Short Day.  Please remember to have your child picked up at 1:00.

We are still looking for a few parents to help with our basket for the POQA sponsered Gala in March.  3rd grade is excited to announce that we will be doing a Sports Themed Basket (or Baskets if needed) with  items from the 4 local Universities.  and the Jazz.  We will also be collecting items for these baskets so start looking and thinking about things that you might possibly donate towards the best basket for the Gala!

Homework

Half Way Through and it Makes Me Sad!

The beginning of the 3rd quarter is always a sad time for me as my 3rd graders are getting ready to become 4th graders.   We still have a lot to learn in order to be ready for 4th grade, but the students are showing so much progress in all subject areas and working so hard.  I know they will be ready, I’m just not sure if I’ll be ready to let them go.

Seesaw Learning Journal
I am excited to announce that we are now a Seesaw Learning Journal Classroom.  I’m sure you’ve heard about how much your student loves going online and using this site to write, reflect and share the fun things that we are learning.  If you have not subscribed to your child’s page, please follow the directions on the invitation they brought home on Wednesday.  There are so many ways for them to express their learning.  On Wednesday we will be attempting to take pictures of our art work and post them.  Wish us luck!

Field Trip Information
Your student should have brought home a field trip permission slip.  We are very excited to be going to the Utah Children’s Theatre and then to the State Capitol for lunch and a quick tour.  We are asking for a $6.00 donation to cover the cost of entrance and partial help with the bus.  No child will be left behind due to inability to pay the donation.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Gala Basket
POQA will be sponsoring a Gala in March where each grade will create a basket for a basket raffle.  We are looking for a few parents  (Hopefully one from each classroom) to head up this project.  We will collect items for the basket from our students  and then turn all items over to our volunteer parents to organize and package into a basket for the Gala.  Please contact me if you would like to be a part of this project.  We really appreciate your willing to help us make this a huge success.

Lunch/Recess/P.E. Notes
Just a reminder, the microwaves in the lunchroom should be used to warm up foods.  We are seeing an increasing number of frozen meals that take 4 to 8 minutes to cook.  This is very hard when there are 15 students waiting at one microwave to warm up their lunch.  If you need to send a microwave meal, please cook it at home and put it in a container that your child can warm it up in the microwave at lunch time.

Please note, the students will be going outside for Recess/PE every day unless it is extremely cold.  Please have them dress for the weather. There is plenty of time for them to put their winter boots, pants, etc. before they go out and to take them off before the eat lunch.  It is very uncomfortable to be in snow boots all day, so please send an extra pair of shoes for them to change into.

Dot and Dash
As promised, the students who did not participate in our class Dot and Dash Group before Christmas will be invited to participate in an after school group on Thursdays from 3:00 to 3:45  very soon  (Note: Thursdays are NOT a club that is sponsored by POQA, it’s just something I do for the students in my class). I cannot give an exact start date at this time as we are waiting for the iPads to be ready for us to use.  If your child is unable to stay after on Thursdays, your child is more than welcome to put their name in the lottery for the club we will be holding on Tuesdays through POQA.  Again, neither of these groups will begin until our iPads are ready to be used.  Just wanted to give you a heads up on the days we will be holding both of these activities.  More information will be forthcoming along with how to sign up for the Tuesday Club.

Multiplication Madness
We will be having our Multiplication Madness Activity in conjunction with our Valentine’s Party.  I will be sending home notes daily on which factor your student is currently working on.  It is so important that the facts be memorized not only for now, but for their math in 4th grade  and in life.  We will be sending home requests for donations for this activity in February.

Makey Makey Demonstration
We have 2 Makey Makey Inventors in our class and they are going to show us how these fascinating tools work to turn anything into an electronic.  Get ready to be fascinated!

HOMEWORK

The area of composite shapes will be the topic we are working on this week.  We will be starting fractions too.  Math homework should be at least 3 times a week at least and recorded in the homework reporting page on the blog.  Choose any of the items below to complete homework for the week.

Indoor Snowball Fights and Field Trip Info

I’m so excited to announce our first field trip of the year!  On February 4th, we will be going  to The Children’s Theatre in Salt Lake to see the production Heroes of World War II.  We are still working out some of the details and will post these as soon as we have them all worked out.

We will also be taking a field trip April 22nd and will release details as it gets closer, but wanted you to know so you can plan accordingly.  1 or 2 other field trips are being looked into, and again we’ll give you details on these as we work out all the details.

If you haven’t heard about our indoor snowball fight, make sure you ask!

We are testing daily on our multiplication facts and need to have 0 – 12’s passed off by February 12th which will our Valentine/Multiplication Celebration.  It is almost impossible to pass these off if they are not practiced at home.  They have 1 minute to pass off all the facts for 1 number.  Ex. All the multiples of 2 up to 12 x 2)

Fix It Sentences:  If you haven’t heard about Fix It Sentences, let me fill you in.  Every week your student has 12 to 15 sentences that they edit during centers.  These sentences are done in their Google Classroom Account, and turned in through the website.  I then correct the sentences and “return” them digitally with all mistakes in red.  If they receive less than 80% they may do ALL the corrections and resubmit them for 80% credit.   There are 14 students who didn’t submit their last week’s work, so they were not corrected.

New spelling groups have been formed and the student’s will be told which group they are in tomorrow during centers.
We took the Spelling Inventory and the students were place in groups where their spelling showed they either needed review or to be challenged.

Homework

Math: We are done with Multiplication!  We are starting Area this week and will have some very fun activities to help us understand  this concept.  Math homework should happen 3 nights a week and may be done on the weekend.  Current options for math homework are any of the following:

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and all other Season Greetings!

This is the last week before Christmas Break, and we will be busy!  We have 2 more sessions of Sage testing to do and should be done by Wednesday with all makeups done as well.  We have our December STEM Project to complete and our parent presents also.

This week we will be focusing on the Grinch and how his heart grew three times larger on Christmas. Each student will have the opportunity to earn 3 hearts by being king, responsible, and respectful.  These hearts are taped onto the Grinch posters that displayed outside our door.  On Friday we will have a Grinch day where the students may dress up as a Who  or something Grinchy for their $1.00 Dress Down Day (This is an optional activity and $1.00 dress down day is ALWAYS optional),

Over the break, there is no assigned homework, but I am encouraging multiplication practice of the 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 10’s multiplication tables.   We will be focusing on the 6, 7, and 8’s  times tables after the break.  Multiplication facts are so important and Mr. Hadley has visited our class and told us how important it is that they learn them, memorize them and then continue to practice them until they are in 4th grade.

As the student’s SAGE test results come back, I would love to share them with you.  I will have appointments open on Thursday from 3:30  to 4:30.   If  you would like to see your student’s results, please e-mail me and I will set up an appointment time with you.  I realize this is not a lot of time to have a large number of people come in, but, if there’s enough interest,  I am willing to stay after in January a few nights and have more of you come in.

Homework:

December Arrives This Week!

I hope everyone had a wonderful and safe  Thanksgiving!

We have three weeks to accomplish our December Goals and it’s going to fly by.

In the next three weeks we will be working on Parent Gifts (Remember to bring in those Cool Whip Lids), memorizing multiplication facts, learning the rest of the lower case cursive letters and working on a fun Grinch project.

We will be starting to pass of our multiplication facts for the first time (we pass them off a variety of ways, numbers times) this week.  As we pass them off the first time, we will also be filling out a glyph (picture) that we will use to graph and take data from.  In the end we will have a Sundae Party (February 14th) where we will build a sundae to celebrate knowing our multiplication facts.  The students will have 1 minute to pass off the facts for each number group (Example: We will start with 2′s, then do 5′s etc).

Chutes and Ladders (Game board was sent home 3 weeks ago)

We will be adding more multiplication games as we learn more of the facts.  Each night of homework is worth 10 points.

Reading:
20 minutes at least 5 times a week.  It is imperative that your child is participating in reading practice at home.  Studies have shown that the more words a child read, the better their achievement is in all other areas.   Not only are they given homework points for reading, but they are also given presentation points for being able to stand up and talk about what they read the night before. Reading is worth 100 points each week. I will be choosing our book talks from the Padlet Entries here, please have your child comment when they are ready to share the next day.  They only need to do a book talk once a month, but many of them like to do more:
