A correction was made to this week’s blog post. Friday, November 3rd, is NOT a dress down day. Students are allowed to wear spirit shirts on Friday, but regular uniform bottoms are required.

Coming up this week:
On top of the Halloween festivities, we also have a busy week of learning. In math, we are learning about Perimeter. We’ll start by learning to determine the distance around quadrilaterals, and then composite shapes. In ELA our reading strategy is rereading for information, and the comprehension skill is understanding the author’s point of view.
Homework:
Can anyone guess how much time students should spend reading each night?
You got it- 20 MINUTES EVERY NIGHT!
Prodigy is updated to contain practice in addition and subtraction, with regrouping, as well as continued review of quadrilaterals. The battles contain the practice problems, and students are challenged to complete 50 problems each week.
Also, if you have chosen to participate in Greg Tang’s Math challenge, you have until November 1st to complete the game board. Additionally, if students complete and return the game board with a parent’s signature, they will receive a classroom incentive as well.
We’ve entered such a fun and wonderful part of the school year! We are moving at a fast pace, and we will not be slowing down. Thanks for hanging in there with us, and for all the support you’ve shown.
Have a FUN and SAFE Halloween
Work hard. Be kind.

Halloween Math Challenge
We are joining a national math challenge for the next week and a half! Each student has a game board and when they do any of the activities on it, they color in the corresponding square. If they complete the board by November 1st, and return the game board with a parent signature, we can enter them into a national drawing. We will also be providing a small prize if they finish the challenge by the 6th of November.
Greg Tang’s Halloween Challenge Link
You may choose to do the Challenge instead of Prodigy Math for the next 9 nights!
Thanks and have a great rest of the week!

Dates to remember:
Oct. 23 Mon: Hats off to Being Drug Free. Students may wear HATS
Besst Reality Food Drive Kick Off Assembly 1:45
Oct. 24 Tues: Be Unique and Don’t Follow the Crowd. Students may wear CRAZY
SOCKS.

Nov. 3 Fri: Cinderella Permission Slip Due (See Link Below)
Nov. 7 Tues: Parent Teacher Conferences 3:30 to 8:00
Nov 9 Thur: Cinderella Field Trip to Fremont High School (Fremont Fieldtrip
Permission Slip)
Parent Teacher Conferences 3:30 to 8:00
We will be using Bloomz.net to sign up for Parent Teacher Conferences. Please make sure that you are set up so you can access our schedule and sign up for your time. The code to join our class is EHTCX7
Exciting Things are Happening!
This week we will be learning about Quadrilaterals, and how we use them in our world. In Language Arts, we will be talking about Government, the Right to Vote and Why It’s Important to Vote. This is a perfect opportunity to fill out your ballot and share this experience with your student.
New This Week!
We will be introducing a new program called Seesaw this week. Seesaw is a digital portfolio that your student will be participating in. You will be given the opportunity to join your child’s site and see the pieces they add to their portfolio. We will be adding personal reflection, sharing learning in various subjects, recording reading, and commenting on things that have happened at school. They will be adding graphic designs that they create, books they write and a variety of other items. You will have the opportunity to not only see your student’s work, but you can also comment through text, or vocal recording about his/her work.
Homework
Once again, homework is 20 minutes of reading on the days that end with y. I like to think of reading at home like piano lessons. If you take the lesson, but never practice at home, you won’t get any better at it.
Math is Prodigy which will have problems with subtraction, addition, place value and a little bit of quadrilaterals all mixed in. Remember, the practice comes when a battle is held. If you just wander around the kingdom, you won’t find the problems. When you complete the problems we assign, it goes to adaptive practice, which reverts to what the diagnostic test shows the student needs. If it seems too easy, the student may have not tried their best on the diagnostic and the computer is trying to figure out where they really belong.
Have a fabulous week and remember to be the best you, you can be!

Correction!
Hello wonderful parents!
I needed to make a quick correction to this week’s blog. The administration has informed us that on Wednesday, students WILL be allowed to wear spirit shirts. (YAY!) The school sent out a weekly update email this afternoon that also clarifies the Wednesday dress requirements.
I apologize if this caused any confusion.

Fall Break
Teaching: Mrs. Alexander
Important Dates:
Monday: Regular school day
Tuesday: Alexa and Xander Birthday!
Wednesday: STEM Lab, Short day, regular uniform required (no spirit T-shirts)
Thursday: NO SCHOOL
Friday: NO SCHOOL
I’m truly amazed by how quickly time has flown by! Wednesday is officially the end of the first quarter and we have covered so much content. We have reviewed and strengthened foundational skills along with covering new information. We’ve had some great fun, too!
A very big THANK YOU to all of you for your help with the Apple Witches. Everyone’s contribution of fabric, dresses, hats and mittens, brooms and time resulted in some seriously awesome creations! To those who helped during the dressing of the witches, another THANKS.
Below is the permission form for the snacks we will be having during our Halloween Party. Please fill this out, and be sure to include your name at the bottom of the form.
Beautiful weather is in the forecast and even though we have an abbreviated week, we will be covering lots of ground.
READING:
This week our reading will center around the strategy of re-reading for comprehension and text evidence, and we will be working to identify the author’s point of view. Please continue to read for at least 20 minutes per night. There will be no at-home reading response, as we will be learning to write book recommendations in class, based on the book your child is reading at home.
MATH:
In Math, we will be completing our unit on subtraction. This week we will learn the subtraction algorithm, subtracting across zeros, and using inverse operations to check work. Prodigy is updated to include the subtraction!
Everyone has worked hard for these first 9 weeks of school. We hope that the Fall Break allows everyone time to rest and relax!
Work hard. Be kind.

It’s Witching Week
Teaching: Mrs. Goldsberry
Important Dates to Remember
Mon. October 9th Witch Dresses, Broomsticks, and hats due
Wed. October 11th Sadie Richards Birthday
STEM Lab
Thur. October 12th Library (Don’t forget your books, we don’t call home for forgotten books)
Rotary Club Assembly
Fri. October 13th Dressing of Witches
Remember Next Wednesday is a short day with Thursday and Friday off for Fall Break
Fall is definitely in the air. I love the rich colors, and the yummy pumpkin spice everything that can be found in food as well as smells. I don’t really love the cooler weather, but it’s better than the dead of winter cold. It’s also a signal to me that our class is into great routines and leaning is well underway. The students, in our class, have written their first essay all by themselves. We will finish them up this week, and we’ve completed 2 1/2 units in math. We’ll finish up subtraction with regrouping this week, and start Quadrilaterals.
In reading, we’re going to be exploring making predictions, and how that helps our comprehension. We will also be talking about ancestors . This is a great time to talk about your family ancestors and where they originate from.
Homework
READING Remember to read 20 minutes a night. This week, we are going to do book talks. This means you are going to bring your book, and tell us a little bit about it. When you’re ready, you click on the plus sign at the bottom of the box, tell us who you are, what the name of your book is, and who wrote it. (I’ve left a sample of what your post should look like). Your book does not have to be a chapter book, just a book you think the rest of us should read.
Math
We are currently working on subtraction with ungrouping. All students should be showing a mastery of Addition and Subtraction, with ungrouping being completed this week. Please remember that the students should complete 50 problems a week in Prodigy. If they do not have time to get this completed at home, I will have them complete it at school.
Thanks in advance for the support you give us and the children in our class. Have a great week!

Witchy Needs!
Dear Parents,
Your third grader is in the process of making an apple witch. For this project, your student needs to bring a few items from home. If you have any problems providing the materials needed, please email us as soon as possible. If we do not hear from you, we will not have extra materials available for your child. Your student will need these materials by Monday Oct. 9th (all put together). If he/she brings them before then, great.
Your student should have brought home a pattern for a robe, hat and gloves. Please have all of these items precut and the dress sewn together, leaving a very small space open (Just big enough for a skewer to fit through) for the neck. If you can make the hat, that would be very helpful also (just roll the hat top into a cone, and glue it in the middle of the hat brim). Place all parts in a baggie and label them with your child’s name. Following these steps will save A LOT OF TIME! Note: If you cannot sew the dress, please send it precut by the 14th of October and we have some fabulous moms who will help us with sewing.
Materials
- 1 Square foot of any material (Cut out the using the dress pattern)
- 1 to 2 Small pieces of felt (Any color you want to match your material. Use the glove pattern and cut out 4. You may use the same piece, or a different color to cut out the hat.
- 1 six inch stick or twig from a tree for a broomstick. Please do not send a dowel. It should be about the size that was shown in class, or in the picture below. If you would like to make your own broom, you may, but please remember they should be smaller than the dress.
We will provide your student with yarn for hair and the needed pipe cleaner for the arms. Upon completion of this portion of the project, your student will be writing about the character they have made. We will then send the apple witch home with a fun story about it. This project will store for many years to come.
We will be dressing our apple witches on Friday October 13th, starting at 8:45. If you can help us that day, please sign the note below and return to school as soon as possible.
Thank you for your support in this project!
Mrs. Goldsberry and Mrs. Alexander
Please comment below if you can sew or if you can come help us dress our witches. We will also be sending out a Bloomz for sign up also.

Family Fun
This gallery contains 1 photo.
Hello wonderful parents!I wanted to remind you all of this fun opportunity that is coming up TOMORROW!This would be such a fun family activity if you have the chance to make it.
Well, hello October!
Teaching
Monday- Mrs. Goldsberry; Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday- Mrs. Alexander
Important Dates
Tuesday (10/3): Picture Retakes!!!
If you missed the first picture day, or would like to have retakes, this is your chance. This is NOT a dress down day, regular uniforms are required.
Wednesday (10/4): STEM Lab
Thursday (10/5): Library, STEM
Friday (10/6): Short day, Spirit Shirts
Things to keep in mind
Anyone who has not paid the $20 school supply fee may do so at the front office. We thank you for your support!
The weather continues to get cooler, so make sure your child brings the appropriate outerwear to school. If an extra layer is needed in the classroom, please remember that no hoodies are allowed. The Quest dress code allows solid colored sweaters in navy, red, or white. Buttons or zippers must be the same color as the sweater. Students are also allowed to wear school spirit sweatshirts or jackets inside the building.
What’s coming up
Apple Witches: They are looking awesome! Kind of gross, but definitely awesome Dress patterns will be coming home with your child this week. We will be dressing our witches on Friday, October 13th, so please be on the lookout for a volunteer invitation coming via Bloomz.
Halloween Party: I can’t believe we are already talking about this! We will be holding our Halloween festivities on the 31st, which is also a short day. For those of you who signed up to help with the party, please be on the lookout for a Bloomz message about the planning for the event.
Homework
Reading: 20 minutes, at least 5 nights of the week! A new assignment is posted on the Google classroom. Students need to post the title, author, and description of the book that they are reading. They also need to make a prediction about what they think will happen in the book. As they continue reading throughout the week, students should come back to their assignment and tell whether their predictions were correct, or what happened instead.
Math: A new assignment has been created in Prodigy. 15 minutes, at least three nights a week. When Mrs. Goldsberry and I log on to our Prodigy account, we can see a graph of the activity level of students throughout the week. We absolutely love seeing high levels of activity!
Have a great week, everyone!
Work hard. Be Kind.
