Food Drive:
Thank you all for the great support for the Food Drive Dress Down. Our class contributed a total of 200 items! There is still time to donate more food on Monday and Tuesday, and I encourage you to send in anything you can. This is a great opportunity to teach our children that they can always make an impact, no matter how young they are!

You should have gotten a letter with instructions and patterns for creating the witches’ clothes. You are welcome to start sending in dresses as soon as you have them sewn. Please have witch dresses returned to school no later than October 16th. If you need someone to sew your dress, just send the pre-cut pieces in a baggie with your child’s name and I will hand it off to one of the many volunteers that have offered their time and talents. If you did not get the Apple Witch instructions, please let me know and I will send another one home with your child.

Even though we are only in school 2 days this week, I STRONGLY encourage you to make a tiny opportunity to do Reflex over the break. I have realized that the Reflex app for phones is not available right now. I’m hoping it will be back soon, and when it is I will make sure to let you all know. If doing Reflex at home is not possible at times, please send me an email or Bloomz message so that I can arrange for your child to have an opportunity to get it completed at school.

Week of September 17th

                                                                Learning never exhausts the mind.
                                                                             -Leonardo DaVinci

Important Dates:

9/17: STEM Lab
9/18: Take a peek at www.scholastic.com to order great books for home. Class Code: TMN4M
9/19:
9/20: Library, apples for Apple Witches due
9/21: Apple Witch carving day, Spirit Day, Early Release

Apple Witch Time:

Apple Witch Example3rd grade has a tradition of carving and dressing apple witches each fall. It is a super fun project that we will connect with a writing activity. Apple witches will be carved in September and set out dry until we dress them in October, just in time for Halloween. We will be carving our apple witches on Friday morning.  I need every student to bring one medium sized apple (we will not be eating them) by Thursday September 20th. The apple needs to be medium size, too big and it will rot, too small and the face won’t be visible.

In order to do this, I need several parent volunteers who would be willing to come into our class on Friday, September 21st at 10:00 and help with this project for an hour or so. We will need 8 parent volunteers, 1/8 teaspoons (at least 10), and apple peelers (at least 8). If you have any of these items but cannot attend, please send them with your child, and I will make sure that they get back to you.

I have created a sign-up on BLOOMZ for you to sign up to help and bring supplies

Later, I will also need a few parent volunteers to sew (at home) extra witch costumes (very easy sewing).  If you would like to volunteer, you may let me know on BLOOMZ, email, or comment on this post.

Coming This Week:
In Math, Multiplication continues! It is so awesome to see the light come on in the students’ eyes as they are grasping concepts. This week we are going to learn how to break groups apart as a strategy for multiplying larger numbers.
In Reading, we will move on to Week 2 of Unit 1. We will be reading The Dream Catcher and Yoon and the Jade Bracelet. The comprehension strategy we will focus on is Visualization and our skill will be identifying Characters, Setting, and Plot. The vocabulary focus will be on using context clues to help us understand new words.

Homework:
It’s easy! 20 minutes of reading every night. Our Reflex reports are having some issues, so we will be doing Reflex at school this week so we can figure out what is happening with our reports.

Work hard. Be kind.

Homework Notice

REFLEX
Yesterday, everyone was able to have the chance to get onto Reflex, log on, and complete a session. Now that everyone is familiar with how to access our class, it is time for Reflex to become Math homework. Remember, students should complete Reflex AT LEAST 3 nights per week (since they did it in class yesterday, they only need 2 more nights this week). Students need to work until they have received their “green light”. You’ll know that they have completed a session when the small circle in the upper right corner of the screen has a green outline and center. If students stop before earning a “green light,” the session does not count.

Instructions to Log-on to Reflex:
1. Go to student links on the Quest webpage, click on Reflex.
If the link does not work go to: www.reflexmath.com
2. Teacher user name is: alexander3
3. Choose our class, then choose your name
4. Students will need to then enter their password (they all know it)

Thanks for helping your child at home to be successful at school!
Work hard. Be kind.
