Perseverance Growth Mindset

In our class we are discussing how we can keep working, keep trying, keep practicing in order to reach mastery of standards.  The following clip we viewed with the students and discussed some strategies they can use themselves to have perseverance just like llama. 

This llama does everything he can to reach his goal and doesn’t let the obstacles keep him down! Think about the following questions as you watch the short clip: 

  • What challenges does the llama face?
  • How did the llama persevere toward his goal?
  • What feelings do you think he experienced while chasing the fruit?
  • How does it feel when you face challenges when you’re working towards a goal? 
  • What kind of things can you say to yourself to help you persevere toward a goal?

Homework for Week February 12-16th

Homework this week is due on FRIDAY, February 16th:

PRINT THIS Homework Tracker 

  • Worksheets: Please look in your child’s green folder on Monday for worksheets with concepts that have been taught in class.  The purpose of this homework is for a quick review, some practice, and a chance for parents to see what their child is learning in math.  Please complete every other problem (alternate between evens and odds so your child gets practice doing story problems AND “Vocabulary Check”/ “Test Practice” problems each week).  If your child wants to do every problem they are certainly free to do so!  :) Please help your child read the directions/example problems and allow them to talk about the problems as they figure out the answers. 
  • Math Fluency Timings: Click on the link to see where your child is at on math timings.Then print the page of timing they are working on. Addition and Subtraction Fluency Timings. Print the page they are working on and put it in a sheet protector in your child’s green folder. Time them for 1 minute and 15 seconds twice. Have them use an expo to write their answers that way you can reuse sheets. 

  • HARDER TIMINGS: If your child has passed off all the other timings here are some new timings I made. They should not have to regroup and should be able to either count on, count back, or know it by heart. Print off Harder Math Timings 10-20.  Here is the tracker to know where your child is at Timings 10-20Time them still for 1 minute 15 seconds. Please let me know if you need help with anything.  
**LANGUAGE ARTS HOMEWORK** 

We continue working on the -i, -y, igh, -ie word families this week. We are working on organization, open syllables, and capitalizing proper nouns.  Fantastic and Nonfiction will be our focus this week.  Point of View is the comprehension skill we will be focusing on and being able to visualize is our comprehension strategy.

1- Daily Reading Fluency 
A Reading for All Learners (Baggy Book) leveled book will be sent home with your child DAILY. Please have your child read the book (or one story from the books that contain more than one story) at least two-three times and then sign the included form. You may supplement your child’s reading using books at home, library books, etc. to fulfill the minimum requirement of 20-30 minutes of reading per day. These are meant to be easier than your students level to work on their sight word and fluency. 

2- Reading 20 minutes per day.  Track your daily reading minutes on the homework tracker sheet.  Make reading every single day a priority.  Ask your students questions using the retell rope visual below. 

3- February Fluency Passage Homework.  Due to reading level benchmark testings for mid-year, students will not have their individual leveled reading homework fluency passages until leveling is completed by our grade level paraprofessional 
Please have your student complete their daily reading timing and activities associated on the back with it.  They should complete 2 questions on the back each day. Next week we should all their leveled homework again.

It is also extremely helpful to have our student re-tell the story to you. Please also have them do this and you may use the visual aid below to assist with the steps to prompt your student if necessary.

STEM PROJECT HELP!

HELP! I forgot to give you guys a heads up (sorry) but we are in need of paper towel cardboard tubes for our STEM project this month. We will do our project on the 22nd and we will simply use any that we can get. So spread the word to family and start collecting these and send them our way now up until February 22nd!

Science Club OPENINGS!

We still have THREE open spots in clubThese three spots will be filled first come, first serve (and paid for) on Monday, Feb. 2.

Club will meet from 3:00-3:45 on the following Tuesdays: February 6th, February 13th, February 27th, March 6th, and March 13th.  Pick up near the front doors of Q1 is at 3:45 sharp!  The fee for this club will be $5.

Students will only be allowed to participate in 1 club each year and rules stated in the contract must be followed for continuation of club involvement.

Hip Hip Hooray! It’s almost the 100th Day!!

100 days of school
The 100th Day of School lands on Thursday, February 1 and we are excited to celebrate!  Each child is welcome to bring a collection of 100 items that day to school (100 buttons, 100 signatures, 100 pom poms…) It’s fun to see what 100 of something looks like!  Just a couple guidelines:  
* Please let your child only bring in a collection that they can carry and manage by themselves (in fact it would be nice if it could fit in their cubbies)
* No food items (per Quest policy)
*Please no items that have been banned (like Pokemon cards)
*Have fun thinking of a creative or unique collection you want to bring :)
