Blue Homework Folders

Parents and students,

We felt the need to remind our students that their blue plastic Homework folders need to be turned in every single morning.  We are asking for your help in this.  Every morning work will be placed in their homework folders and every Friday all homework is collected and graded.  If homework is not turned in by Friday it will receive a 0 in the gradebook, unless the student has been excused absent.  In that case the student will have as many days as they were absent to turn in the missing work.  Thank you so very much for all that you do for your students to be successful, we are a team to facilitate in their learning.  Please help your child to remember their blue homework folder every day.

Homework 8/29-9/2

Homework this week is due on Friday, September 2:

**We cannot stress the importance enough that your child should be turning in his homework folder every morning**

1- Math Homework:
  • Please look in your child’s blue homework folder on Tuesday for this week’s fluency timing (“Adding Two’s“) in a plastic sheet protector.  Have your child practice these facts repeatedly using a dry-erase marker.  Time how long it takes to finish and record their best time and score each day on the “Math Homework” form (included in the blue folder also) and return on Friday.  By the end of 1st grade, the target goal is to finish the timings in 1 minute and 15 seconds, with 90% accuracy (23 out of 25 problems correct). Encourage your child to keep improving on their own score, rather than expecting them to reach the target goal yet.  We have a whole year to reach it through consistent practice!
2 – Reading Homework:
  • This upcoming week for homework we will only have reading homework. Please print out the reading tracker below and read with your child 20 minutes every night! Homework will be due every Friday. So please record any reading done the weekend before homework is due.
  • For example this weeks homework will be due on Friday September 2nd. So if we were tracking my reading we would put this weekends reading the August 27-28th on that reading log. Please have your child’s reading log in their blue folder and we will collect them.
  • We will hopefully have either a reading passage or a baggy book ready for your child to take home starting either Monday or Tuesday of next week to give them something different to read at home. We will post more about that as soon as we get them ready. Thanks!
  • Weekly-Reading-Log

Reminders

water bottle
Hot Weather + Recess = Thirsty First Graders!  🙂

Please send your child with a water bottle EACH DAY to keep in their cubbies (preferably one that doesn’t spill easily).   One drinking fountain with an entire class of students takes a lot of time and we want to make sure they are getting enough water.

Headphones

HeadphonesWe will begin using computers next week.  If your child has not brought headphones to school yet we encourage you to send them as soon as possible. We use our headphones EVERY SINGLE DAY, often all at the same time, and we do not allow students to borrow other students’ headphones because of liability in case they are broken, etc.

Zoo Field Trip will be September 6th from 9:00am-1:00pm in order for your child to participate they must have permission from the yearly permission slip below. I am missing a few students permission from parents. I will send emails out of who is missing theirs.

Please sign the yearly permission slip CLICK HERE This gives your child permission to participate in all the activities and learning experiences this year. I also can’t stress enough the importance of paying the office the donations for the field trip and parties. We rely on these donations in order for those activities to take place. It is $15 for the year for our field trips and $12 for our class parties. That amount will take care of ALL the activities for the year.

Return blue homework folders daily.  This is an opportunity for your student to practice being responsible.

Scholastic Book Orders

i love reading_boy3b_Happy Doodle Class
We are excited to utilize the Scholastic Reading Club program in our classroom this year.  Ordering books for your children through this program gives our class points towards free books that your child will utilize in the classroom throughout the year.

Our first book order will be due Wednesday, August 31st
.   The Scholastic Book order link is located on the sidebar of our class blog (look for the red box) or simply click here: Scholastic Reading Club.  Ordering online is fast and easy, our class activation code is: N8TKQ.  Online ordering allows you to shop all the books, not just the select books in the current flyer.

At Quest Academy we use Guided Reading to determine the level of our students reading ability.  Scholastic provides an option to shop by Guided Reading Level (GRL).  This is a great way to help provide your students with books that are on their reading level.

Homework Folders

Homework folders went home with your child in their backpacks today.  We are working at our students developing good habits of taking care of them for the entire year and returning them every single morning.  We were able to level all of our students on our take home reading books and that will begin in 2 weeks.  Please make sure to remind your students to bring them back every day as part of our morning routine.  We also will begin computer work next week and your students must have their over the head headphones labeled and at school.  We thoroughly enjoy your students and look forward to seeing them grow in learning this year.

Back to School Bash & Homework

Your child should be reading at minimum 20 minutes every day. For now please just read books from home. This first time we will count it if you are reading to your child as well. Please have them read by themselves but you may also count time that you read to them this first time. Please send a note in their homework folder on Friday morning if they have read this week for their reading homework points this week. Also- homework folders do not go home with your child on the weekends.  Here Weekly-Reading-Log is the reading homework log for this week- if you prefer to print something out to keep track of daily reading.

We will usually have a reading passage in their homework folder for them to be timed on and for them to read at home, but we haven’t gotten to read one on one with the students yet. This should hopefully be done this week, if not next. We will also get Raz-Kids up and running then they can go online and read books their as well.

Happy Reading! 🙂
