Reading Passages Link for At-Home Practice

10 ways to become a better reader

Below is a link to some reading passages that are very similar to the ones that your student will be encountering in the upcoming DIBELS test in January.  Please use the “Level 100″ passages to help your student practice for the DIBELS test, which is a very important one-minute timed test.  Even those these are not the exact passages that will be used, exposure to similar passages such as these and a simulation of the actual timed test will prepare your child and help him/her feel more comfortable when they experience the real test.

Scholastic Book Orders

I just wanted to let you know that I will be placing the Scholastic Book Order much, much earlier this month so that you will be able to receive your books before Christmas break!   If you place an order after this time, you will still receive it, of course, but it may not be received until after we return from the break.

If you are ordering books for a gift, please let me know and I will allow you to come pick them up in the classroom so they can remain a surprise.

Please have all online orders in by this Friday, December 7th!

If you are ordering online at scholastic.com, our Class Activation Code is N8TKQ.
Thank you!

A Special Visitor!

We had a visitor, Miss LaRue, from Lotus Park Assisted Living, come to read books to our first grade today!  We loved Miss LaRue right from the start – with her cheery smile LaRue was an instant success!  She shared with us some Christmas Traditions she had as a little girl who grew up in the Depression Era.  Ask your kiddo’s what she would get on Christmas.

Lotus Park Assisted Living is our first grade community partner.  We will be doing a couple service projects for them this year and we will be inviting the veterans from Lotus Park Assisted Living to our patriotic performance in the spring.

Please use the “Daily Low Temperature” as a guideline when dressing your child for school!

Hello, Fabulous Parents!

We have had some bitter cold temperatures right before school and during morning recesses lately, and I am a little concerned about some of the cold kiddos I have seen!  Most kids are appropriately dressed, but some kids have very little outerwear and have even expressed to me how cold they are!

Here are a few things to bear in mind when deciding on outerwear for school:
  • It is often well below the daily high temperature when the children are waiting outside for school to start and during morning recess.  Please do not use the daily Freezinghigh temperature as a guideline for choosing outerwear!  Try to imagine yourself standing outside in line for 5-10 minutes in the early morning frost and imagine what you’d like to be wearing!
  • We only stay inside for recess (and before school) when the temperature is below 20 degrees.  So, that means that your child will often be out in below-freezing temperatures! Please dress accordingly.  The students’ cubbies are plenty big enough to house all manner of outwear, including hats, gloves, scarves, boots, etc.
I absolutely adore your children and I want them to enjoy their recesses as much as possible!  We did have an anonymous parent donate some hats and mittens for any children whose families may be experiencing financial strain; I am unsure of who may have a need, so please let me know by e-mail if you have a need for a hat or mittens.  Thank you so much!
