5th Grade AFTER school Club!

Please print off the permission slip if you are interested in doing the after school club for 5th grade. The focus for this club will be STEM. Make sure to turn it into me as soon as possible. Remember, this is NOT required, just optional. Also, even if you turn in your permission slip, we can only accept a few applicants. So the sooner the better!!!!!

PS – Halloween was a great success, as all of the fun and learning we have been having! Thanks again for all your help and support in the classroom.

Reading Minutes are now available in “Our Google Classroom”

Dear Parents and Students –
I hope you had a wonderful Halloween! Thank you to all of our volunteers the past few activities, it has been great to see you and watch the great interaction you have with your own child and the others in our grade. I love how this school is a family and how we are always working together to put the KIDS first! Thank you for being so supportive and willing to help out. Without the teamwork with all of us, I don’t think Quest would be as great as it is!!!!
Main reason I put out this post is to inform students and their parents that I have made the reading minutes available in the Google Classroom. The students do not have to get the paper from there, but it is available. There are two (informational and literature) they just need the one that matches the type of book they are reading. They read all week, fill in the questions (1 a day) and turn in WITH PARENT SIGNATURE on the following Monday. This will not go on their grades, but it helps me stay informed on reading at home, and each slip is put in a drawing for them to win a prize. I want them to want to read at home!!! Research supports reading at home and the more they do the higher test scores go up, learning techniques, and problem solving skills. In a win win situation, I want to support that in my classroom. I will  keep them as a hard copy in my classroom if students just want to grab them there.
Thanks again for all your help,

Mrs. Young

PS – don’t forget to sign up for PTC!!! See you next week!

STEM project 2

BALLOON CARS!!!!!

The first pictures are of my students researching safe sites to find the best route to take when building their cars. They also are in charge of bringing their own materials. I wanted to have them choose their own materials this time, because I think that will help how the cars move and react!!! This one is a competition to see whose cars will go the farthest, but ALSO straight and steady!!!

EVERYONE working hard, engaged, and trying to solve the problem in a fun and exciting way! This is what STEM is all about.

Upcoming Events
We have many events coming up in the next few months.

1st: On October 18th, Sub Zero will be coming and presenting to the entire 5th Grade. They will be showing Physical and Chemical change in matter. They will be doing this by using ingredients to make ice cream and then spaying it with liquid nitrogen. Students will be allowed to select the ingredients they would like to have their own ice cream made. Click on the following link to view the Sub Zero Menu. We cannot guarantee that all ingredients will be brought to the school. Each student who would like ice cream will need to pay $3.00 to the front office, prior to this activity. All students will be able to experience the presentation, but we will only allow students who have payed to eat the ice cream. Please give permission below.

2nd: The entire 5th grade will be taking a field trip to the Discovery Gateway Museum, on October 24th. Students will need to be dropped off to the Roy Front Runner Station by 8:25 am. We will ride the Front Runner to Salt Lake and then take Trax to the Discovery Gateway Museum. Students will then need to be picked up, from the Roy Frontrunner Station, at 2:45 pm. We are able to take 6 Chaperones, at no cost. More are welcome to come, but will need to pay their own fair for the Front Runner, there is not cost at the Gateway Museum. There will not be a cost for students and six chaperones. If you would like to come please let me know below. If I have more than five volunteers, I will randomly select the five that will get in for free, on October 18th. If you are not selected to get a free pass, Front runner offers a great group pass you can split with other parent volunteers. Please do not bring any siblings.

All Student will need to bring a sack lunch from home and a backpack to carry it in.

3rd: Halloween. We will be having our Halloween party on October 31st. We would like to involve food in this party. Please answer below the items your student can, or cannot eat.

4th: The entire 5th grade will be taking busses to Fremont High School to watch their production of Cinderella, on November 9th. We are asking for a $3.00 donation to help cover the cost of busses. We will not need chaperones for this field trip, but please give permission below for your student to attend.

Alternate activities will be available for all of the above events, for any student who is not able to attend.

A total of $6 donations can be paid to the front office for these events.

Ice Cream Party (Tuesday, October 3)

Hello –
Wow… It is almost October. Where did September go. ? ! I sure love fall, it is my favorite time of year. Just a few dates to watch for…
*Sept. 29- Dress Down Friday!!! $1
* Oct. 3 – Ice cream party/ movie (be sure to sign the permission slip on my previous post) no links, the post is the permission slip to fill out.)
* Library is EVERY Monday, please have books back and ready to turn in that day.
*October 18 is a short day… and the last day of 1st quarter. CRAZY!!! I know!
*October 19 -20: No School (Fall Break)
*October 31 Happy Halloween!!! Dress Down! (Our Annual Parade and Short day!)
*November 1 – Teacher Training (No School for students)

The start of the year has been great! WE have learned our procedures and we understand expectations set by me (Mrs. Young) and our school. Starting in October… I will start sending home the weekly reading slip. Students should know how to complete it and return it with no problem. I do ask that once a week, a guardian signs  it to monitor the student’s reading minutes.

Our First Book Share is Due… October 18. The students have been working on a practice one and are ready to do their own at home. They wrote the rubric and set the criteria. I am so excited to see their creativity. If they lose or misplace the rubric or expectations, they can always reprint it off or look at it in the Book Share page.
If you have any further questions please email me, or come by before or after school.

Thanks so much for your help and support,  We truly have the best parents and students here at QUEST!!!

Best Wishes,
Mrs. Young
