Week of February 23rd – 28th

Here’s a few notes about what is happening in our class this week:
Don’f forget about the book order.  You can return the order form to me, or order directly from the website.  Orders are due February 28th.  The class site is at the following link:
https://orders.scholastic.com/W8P64
Most of the students have returned the maturation permission form. If you still need to sign and return it would you please do so as soon as possible. Even if you do not want your child to attend, the form needs to be signed and returned with the box stating your choice selected. If you have not seen the form, or your child has lost it, you can go  link  where you can print it, or I can give a new page to your child. They only need to ask me.

Due to another obligation I will not be tutoring on Tuesday this week. It will be held on Wednesday instead. We are focusing on long division right now, which is still a challenge for many students, so if your child could use some extra help they are welcome to stay from 3:00 -3:30 on WEDNESDAY.

Math:
We are multiplying decimals by whole numbers.  The students will learn that all they have to do is multiply like normal, then make sure the answer has the same number of decimal places as the decimal places of the factors.

We are still doing our Little Caesars Pizza fundraiser. It is really important to our school, as the money we raise (or don’t raise) will determine if we are able to do field trips and special activities at the school. It really is a good deal for anyone who ever purchases pizza from Little Caesars. If your child has lost their order form,  there should be an attachment in an email sent from POQA, or they can get more at the office.

Week of February 18th – 21st

I hope everyone had an enjoyable long weekend.  Because it is a short week this week, we have a lot to get done in not much time.

A few announcements:
As we didn’t quite reach our Little Caesars goal, the fundraiser will be extended until Friday, February 28th.  For every three cards sold by elementary students, they will receive a prize. Dr. Dave and Mrs. Angelee introduced the prizes to the students today, and they seemed very excited to continue selling.  Students who had already sold three or more cards received them today. Students in the Jr. High will have their name entered into a drawing for a $100 gift card for every three cards sold. Also, the top three classes will win a pizza and ice cream party.
The Little Caesars Breadstick cards are $10 and gives you 10 bags of breadsticks and crazy sauce. These usually cost over $4. This gives you a savings of over $30. Quest makes $7 off of every card students sell. The money raised for this fundraiser helps with field trips, field day, after school clubs and other school activities. These cards make great gifts for neighbors, friends, and family members.

We’re going to be learning about the early exploration of the Americas.

Frozen Fun and Field Trips!

Hello All,
I’m glad we all made it through this wild week of winter weather!  We had a great field trip and enjoyed a week of inside recess.

Today your student brought home information about the maturation lessons we will be having on March 13th.  This will be taught by a nurse,  and boys and girls will be taught separately.  The girl session will begin at 8:40 and the boy session will begin at 9:40.  The form has more information about specifics, and options for parents to decide if they would like their child to attend.  Each student must return the signed form with the parents decision indicated.  Here is a link to the form, incase your child has misplaced it.

Don’t forget we have our class Valentine’s Day party on Friday.     We will be having ice cream sundaes and playing games.  Many students still need the permission form filled out so they can attend.  If you have not already done so, please fill it out as soon as possible.  The link is here: Valentine’s Day Party Permission Form
Students may bring valentines to exchange with each of their classmates.  We currently have 25 students in our class.  Students should  also bring a container to collect valentines from their classmates.  They can bring anything they want, and decorate it however they want.  Just make sure it has the child’s name visible.  We will be having a fun time at our party, and it will be even better if more people can sign up to bring things.  The link for the signup sheet can be found here:

This upcoming week we will be learning a lot of great stuff, here’s a preview:                                                                                                                                        Math:    We will be learning about dividing fractions.  This may sound a bit daunting, but really it is pretty simple if you remember, ” Keep, Switch, Flip.”     This means when dividing fractions, keep the first number the same,  switch the division symbol for multiplication, and flip the second number, so that the numerator is now the denominator, and the denominator is the numerator.  See, clear as mud!  Don’t worry, we’ll have it down by the end of the week.                                                                                                                   *Also, please remember we have  math tutoring every Tuesday after school, from 3:00  – 3:30. We are currently focusing on long division.  If you know that is something your child needs help with, they are invited to stay and get some extra help.

* Science:  We are continuing our landforms unit.  Take a chance to point out interesting landforms you might see, and talk about where they came from. Maybe your student could teach you a thing or two!
*Social Studies:  We are working on map skills.  Learning how to use map legends, understanding directions, and finding places, on maps.                                                         Thanks for everything you do!  Let’s have a wonderful week!

Happy February!

Wow! How did we get through the month of January so fast?  Can you believe the school year is half over, and the 3rd quarter well underway?

We have some great stuff coming up.  Most important is our field trip to the state capitol and the planetarium on Tuesday.  Thank you for signing the permission form, and to the parents who are coming as chaperones.  The state has set a limit on the number of people we can bring, so if you are not already a chaperone we will not be able to accommodate you.

We we be on the field trip all day, so please make sure that your child brings a sack lunch.

Math:
We are continuing with multiplying fractions.  We are getting pretty good at it.  This week we’ll be practicing multiplying fractions in story problems.
