Dear Parents,
Just a heads up that we have a very busy month ahead of us.  There will be more info and permission slips to come but just as a heads up, this is what is on our schedule:

Tuesday, February 14th: Valentine’s Day party (Volunteers needed!)
Thursday, February 16th: State Capitol Field Trip (We have charted buses for this one, so we will not be taking the Frontrunner)
Tuesday, February 21st:Discovery Gateway Reaction Time Assembly (5th grade only) 
Thursday, February 23rd: PTC’s 3:30-5:30
Tuesday, February 28th: Weber State Storytelling Festival/Sub Zero Field trip
Wednesday, March 1st: Utah Symphony Field Trip

We will have a 1:5 chaperone to student ratio for our field trips and I will do my best to make sure everyone who wishes to chaperone gets the opportunity at sometime during the year.  It is very important that we stick to the chaperone guidelines that we are given by the facilities to ensure that we are invited back in upcoming years.  Chaperones will be picked once permission slips have been returned.  I will get those written and sent home closer towards the end of the month. 🙂  

*If you would like the school to provide a sack lunch for your child for the field trip, please know they are available for a charge of $1.75.  They will consist of an uncrustable sandwich (peanut butter & jelly), bag of carrots, an apple and a juice box.  We do need a one week advanced notice if this is something you are interested in.

Today in class we talked about the characteristics of non-fiction text and then did a hunt for them during centers.  I am having the students review the last two week’s vocabulary so that we can test on it before the next term.  Because of this I am not introducing new vocabulary for this week.  
In science we began to discuss MATTER.  We talked about how matter is anything that takes up space and has mass.  It also has several characteristics that we can use to describe it.  We did an activity today in class where we used these characteristics to see if others could guess what we were thinking of.  This is one of the most fun science units we do in fifth grade!
I am also having the kids present their Revolutionary War hero Prezis this week in class.  Hopefully they can all get finished up in time.  We have been working on them solely in class but if they need to be finished up at home they can!
We also started Geometry today and talked a bout POLYGONS!
The IXL homework is: AA.1, AA.2, AA.3  *Remember 20 minutes or 75%
They will also need to do their Tuesday night sort work homework since we are starting this week on a Tuesday.
