For our STEM project this month, students designed their own egg dippers using pipe cleaners! This was a fun one, and the kids really got excited about it.  They were happy to bring their little “egg babies” home. Unfortunately, even though I really tried, I was unable to get a picture of everyone doing the STEM project, but I got most. 🙂

For this week, there are 7 components required for weekly homework:

1. Book Buddy Reading (20-30 minutes every day!)
2. Spelling
4. Math
5. Timed Reading: Fiction
6. Timed Reading: Non-Fiction
7. Record Reading Minutes for Library Reading Challenge by clicking on the “LIBRARY READING CHALLENGE” tab at the top of our blog (as pictured below):
Print the NEW HOMEWORK FORM (CLICK HERE) which is found here or under the “Homework Form” tab above.   

• This form does NOT need to be printed or turned in for credit during weeks that we are doing only READING homework.  Simply initialing the form that comes home with your child’s Book Buddy is sufficient during those weeks.

A Reading for All Learners (Book Buddy) leveled book will be sent home with your child DAILY. Please have your child read the book (or one story from the books in which there is more than one story) at least two-three times and then sign the included form. You may supplement your child’s reading using books at home, library books, etc. to fulfill the minimum requirement of 20-30 minutes of reading per day. 

• Study the following spelling and phonics words using any method you wish in order to prepare for the weekly spelling test on Fridays.
• There is a list of recommended spelling study activities that you can access BY CLICKING HERE for Spelling Word Activities, but, again, you may use any method you wish.  
• Please write the spelling words (7 words) in alphabetical order on the Homework Form.

1.)  Complete this week’s My Math homework pages and staple them to the homework form. The assigned pages are:

2.) Practice math skills for 20 minutes (in total for the week – you don’t need to practice for 20 minutes per day) using any “Math Activity” listed here: CLICK HERE for Math Activities

3.) Complete the math facts fluency timing each day, Monday-Thursday, and record the scores for the week on your homework form.  

We are on “Subtracting From 10.”

• With the fluency timing in the plastic sheet protector, use a dry-erase marker to practice repeatedly.  Record your time (number of minutes and seconds) and number of correct answers each day on your Homework Form. (No need to calculate a percentage score.)

• The target goal is to finish all 25 problems in 1 minute and 15 seconds, with 90% accuracy (23 out of 25 problems correct).

Time your student for one minute each day, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, and record the number of words he/she was able to read in one minute.  Ask your child to “re-tell” the story back to you, trying to include as many details as possible (see re-tell guidelines at the bottom of this post).

This week: use the “Lesson 18” page. 

Fill out the daily score on the Homework Form and submit.  **There is no need to print out the passage unless you would like to; printouts do not need to be turned in for homework credit.

First grade has been invited to perform a couple patriotic program songs for the upcoming Quest Academy Gala. We are able to have 5 students from our class participate. We are offering this special opportunity on a first come, first serve basis, so the first five students to sign up will be welcome to perform at the Gala.  Parents of the first five students to sign up will receive a confirmation e-mail from me in the next week or so.  If you do not receive an e-mail, then you were not among the first five.

Performing students must arrive at 6:00pm and perform at 6:15pm

For those purchasing tickets to the Gala, your child will go to a separate room before and after the performance. They will be fed and supervised while you enjoy the Gala. 

We were so excited to receive Helen Keller, Harriet Tubman, and Susan B. Anthony in our classroom!  We learned so much about these historical heroes!

Below is a link to a new form for the pizza lunch count for this week.  PLEASE ONLY FILL OUT THE FORM FOR THE CURRENT WEEK – PLEASE DO NOT SIGN THE FORM MULTIPLE TIMES FOR FUTURE WEEKS.

We have had great difficulty obtaining an accurate lunch count for the pizza that has been served on Fridays.  As such, we will now be adding a link to an online form as part of our weekly homework post (the link will be at the bottom of each week’s homework post), so that I can obtain information directly from parents.  

Each week that you would like your child to receive pizza that Friday, please fill out the form BY 8:30 A.M. THE DAY BEFORE (THURSDAY) the pizza will be served. It is your responsibility to be certain that you have sufficient funds in your child’s lunch account (lunch is $2 per meal). I will be taking the pizza count directly from the form, and the lunch staff will not have extra pizza on hand, so if you’d like your child to receive pizza, please fill out the form on time. A lunch count for the alternative entree option will be taken in class. Once again, PLEASE ONLY FILL OUT THE FORM FOR THE CURRENT WEEK – PLEASE DO NOT SIGN THE FORM MULTIPLE TIMES FOR FUTURE WEEKS.

I’ve noticed a drop-off in the number of students receiving “orange trains” from the library to color, which has some students feeling a little sad.  Please be sure that you’re recording your reading minutes each week for the Library Reading Challenge!  Every minute counts, including minutes spent reading Book Buddies, doing reading timings, or any leisurely reading! 

Just a reminder that, due to teacher professional development, there is no school on Friday, March 17^th.  Enjoy a wonderful long weekend!

 Also, I regret that I made an error when posting the homework assignment for this week, which should have been a “reading homework only” week.  The math and spelling homework portions that were posted this week will be re-posted for next week’s homework, so feel free to turn in the math and spelling homework either tomorrow or next Friday – equal credit will be given for meeting either deadline.

Students will not have a spelling test on Thursday, March 16th.
