Looking ahead

Parent Teacher Conferences are quickly approaching. They will be February 2nd and 3rd (Wednesday and Thursday). Please remember that our PTC schedule in half day kindergarten is slightly different than the rest of the school. Wednesday, February 2nd, will be a short day schedule for all Quest students. Thursday, February 3rd, half day kindergarten will have NO SCHOOL while all other Quest students will have a short day. This is so we have enough time to meet with everyone. If you would prefer a Zoom conference please let me know directly through email at msonntag@questac.org. Thank you!

What we are learning

We are now beginning Unit 5 in Language Arts. Below are the power words, oral vocabulary words, letters, and sounds we will be mastering during the next 3 weeks. We are working on handwriting and continuing to blend sounds to read words.

We are starting into subtraction in math. This week we are learning subtraction within 5. Each child is continuing to make progress on their individual math pathway.

We love science. This week our STEM activity students think about their experiences with hot and cold weather, and learn about a real city where the sun never shines in winter. In the activity, Chill City, students experiment with different types of materials (opaque, transparent, and reflective) to figure out how to reflect light. They use this to bring light and warmth to an imaginary paper town.

What we are learning this week

We are now beginning Unit 4 in Language Arts. Below are the power words, oral vocabulary words, letters, and sounds we will be mastering during the next 3 weeks. By the time we complete this unit, we will have been introduced to all our sound wall sounds. We are working on handwriting and continuing to blend sounds to read words.

Wonders Unit 4

In math, we are exploring addition and will start subtraction shortly. We are also making great progress on our individual math pathways (ask us about the standard we are working on).

We look forward to our science and STEM lessons.

In this weeks lesson, students learn why spring is the best time for babies to be born. In the activity, Build A Bird Nest, students make a model of a bird nest and notice how birds can change their environment to meet their needs when they build their nests.

What we’re learning this week

Now that most of the student know all their letter names and sounds, we are working on letter naming fluency. The goal is to name 55 random letters (upper or lower) in 1 minute (that’s about 1 letter per second…that’s fast)! They enjoy letter flashcard games and I encourage you to practice at home, along with reading the take-home decodables (decodables are sent home on Wednesdays). You have all been so wonderful at working with your children at home. Thank you!!

Here’s a quick overview of new things we will learn this week:

Comprehension strategy: “Visualize” . We will read a fictional story, a fantasy and an informational text to go along with our theme “What places do you go during the week?”

New High Frequency Word: “go”

Phonics:blend and isolate sounds in CVC words. New sound/spelling: Cc

Sound Wall: /u/ as in spoon, /w/ as in window, /j/ as in jump, and /oi/ as in boy.

Vocabulary: routine, neighborhood, local, intelligent, volunteer

Math: Lesson 11 “Make 6, 7, 8, and 9” and continue learning the routine for math pathways. Students have time 3 days a week to work on our math power standards at their own pace during math pathways time.

Fun Friday Nov. 19th: Thanksgiving Pizza Feast. We will be reading a Thanksgiving book called “Turkey Trouble” and enjoying a slice of pizza (which goes along with the storyline of the book). The pizza will be the same pizza that is served that day in the lunchroom to the rest of the school. (Please let me know if you prefer your child not having a slice of pizza that day msonntag@questac.org)

BOOK ORDER

I know some of us just received the book order from October, but I got an email saying that if you would like books as Christmas gifts I need to have an order in by November 5th (Friday…tomorrow). Books make great gifts. If you’d like to order books for Christmas click the link below and enter the code WTH94

https://clubs.scholastic.com/home

Also, let me know if they are gifts so I don’t let your kindergartner see the books when they arrive.

Halloween parade

Happy Halloween! We are planning on having a modified version of our annual Halloween parade on Friday, October 29th. We will start our afternoon kindergarten parade at 11:15 am, we ask that students come to school already dressed in their costumes. For those who would like to attend the parade they should bring camping chairs or blankets and set them up along the outside of the Q1 building (see map below—the yellow dots indicate the route we will take and where families can sit). Everyone watching the parade should position themselves as close to the building as possible to allow our students to parade on the sidewalks surrounding the school.

Costume guidelines:
Please note that costumes should be modest and without blood or gore. Students are welcome to paint their faces and wear Halloween masks; however, those masks will only be worn when directed to do so by the classroom teacher (e.g. during the parade, when a class picture is taken, etc). Weapons and anything that depicts violence are not allowed on school property (knives, guns, swords, spears, etc.). If you have questions about costume accessories, please contact us. Just to reiterate, no blood, either depicted on the costume or in makeup, is allowed.

After the parade, our class will go back to class and continue with the Halloween celebrations!

I am excited to see all the kids in their fun/awesome halloween costumes!
