Name Badges

In case you didn’t get the email about badges, we are posting the same information here.  Please read it carefully as all students need to have their badges by Tuesday of next week.

We are hoping to get some help with an issue we are having at the school regarding missing name badges. As stated in our Handbook, “Everyone is required to wear their name badge to attend class (the name badge must be that of the current school year). Please reinforce having name badges as they create a safer environment at the school. To replace a lost name badge, your child will need to pay $5.00 for a new one. A student without a name badge will be referred to the office to call home. Parents/Guardians will be expected to bring their child’s name badge or pay $5.00 for a replacement. Only then will students be allowed to return to class.” Elementary students are to leave their name badges in their classrooms at the end of the day. Jr. High students are encouraged to leave their name badges in their lockers before leaving. To ensure your child receives a full day’s worth of learning in the classroom, please make sure their name badge is left at school and returned the following day if accidentally taken home. Please note, that you have this week as a grace period to either find your child’s lost name badge or replace it for $5.00. Starting Tuesday, January 16 (one week from today), students who do not have name badges will not be attending class until a new one is purchased or their old one is returned. If parents are working when their children call, they are more than welcome to either pay for a badge using a credit card over the phone or to pay online.

Thank you!

Reading
Unit 3 Week 4

Math
The students have been working at their own pace in Frontrowed.com and have been doing beautifully.  They are working on achieving mastery in all concepts in Numbers in Base Ten (Rounding, Add/Sub within 1000, and Multiplication Strategies), Geometry (Naming Quadrilaterals and their attributes), Measurement and Data (Finding Perimeter), and Numbers in Base 10 (Beginning Multiplication Strategies).

We are also working on Multiplication Madness.  The students are taking daily timed tests on the various fact families.  We will be celebrating our learning on February 14th  with an ice cream social.

Homework
As usual 20 minutes of reading is the most important part of homework.  Reading for 20 minutes a day is the best way to increase vocabulary and comprehension skills.
The second part of homework is math.  There are several options for math practice at home.  Any of the following are an excellent way to practice math at home:
1)  Prodigy  for 15 to 20 minutes 3 times a week
2)  Front Row Ed Targeted Practice one assignment
3)  Front Row Ed Adaptive Practice for 15 to 20 minutes 3 times a week
4)  Multiplication games that we have learned in class (You will need cards to play these)

We are also working hard to improve our informational writing skills and will soon be moving onto opinion writing.

Thank you for all of your support and have a fabulous week!

Welcome, 2018!

Teaching this week: Mrs. Alexander

Happy New Year!
We hope that you all have had a wonderful, restful winter break, but we’ve missed your sweet children and are ready to have them back in the classroom. It’s time to pick up right where we left off and move full speed ahead. Thank you for all of the support you’ve shown us so far and we look forward to all the excitement to come.

Dates to remember:
Mon.   Jan 1: NO SCHOOL
Tues.   Jan 2: NO SCHOOL
Wed.   Jan 3: Back to school! STEM Lab
Thurs. Jan 4: STEM, Library(remember to bring your books, students will not be allowed to call home)
Fri.      Jan 5: Early Release; wear Quest Spirit Shirts
*Monday, Jan 15: NO SCHOOL

What’s to come:

Reading:
We will begin the fourth week of Wonders Unit 3, where our reading will focus on New Ideas. Our comprehension strategy will be summarizing, and we’ll exercise the skill of determining main idea and important details.

Phonics:
The phonetic focus for this week are the prefixes of pre-, dis-, and mis-. We will target these prefixes by determining word meaning, using them in writing and proofreading.

Math:
This week, we will be using strategies for x2 and x5 multiplication facts. Although some students may know their multiplication facts for 2 and 5, these strategies will allow them to develop the skills to multiply numbers larger than 12, as well as develop an understanding of inverse operations. This understanding is one of the foundational skills needed to learn division.
Multiplication Madness continues! We test our multiplication facts every morning, and as students pass off a set of facts, they move on to the next. The order that facts are tested in is as follows:
0, 1, 2, 5, 9, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12
We are excited to continue our pilot period of FrontRowEd, and support students as they work on differentiated material and progressing at rates independent to each individual’s learning needs.

Homework:
Reading: What a wonderful time of the year to make a new commitment to reading. I’d like to suggest a commitment of at least 20 minutes of reading every day of 2018!
Math: Prodigy is updated with material correlated to our classroom instruction. 15 minutes of practice, at least 3 nights per week will help students develop accuracy and speed!

Let’s make 2018 the very best of your child’s educational journey (so far).
Work hard. Be kind.

Thur.  Dec. 14th   Library  (Please remember to bring your books so you have something new to read over the break)
Fri.   Dec 15th Early Out (Last Day of school until Wed. January 3rd)

We do want to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas.  We are so happy that we have such a wonderful class and fabulous parents who support us as we teach your children.  We both feel like your children are partly ours!  Thank you for sharing them with us!

We are so excited about all of the projects we have going on this week!

Project One
We will be working on a Christmas Surprises for all of our parents.  We are in need of 3 more Cool Whip lids.  Please check your cupboards and see if you have a couple you may have missed.
With this project going on, we will not be using parent volunteers this week.  We would hate to have you see your surprise before Christmas.

Project Two
We will be bagging dog food and cat food into serving sizes so those who are in need of help with their pet will be able to pick up a couple of meals for their furry friends.

Project Three
We are still working on earning hearts for being Kind, Responsible, and Respectful. On Friday we will be joining in the grade Grinch Activity.  Keep earning those hearts!

Project Four
If we complete our parent gifts early we may be able to squeeze tie dying our shirts into the end of the week.  This is a maybe, not a promise.  We need to get everything else done, and have the dye come in (it’s s not here yet)!

Food Permission
Please fill out the permission slip below.  It will cover several curriculum subjects for the next 3 months.

Math
We are working on passing off our Multiplication Facts, and polishing up our perimeter finding skills.  We will also be learning several multiplication games that you can play over the break.  The more fun you have with them, the easier they’ll be to memorize.

We are also continuing on with FrontRowEd math.

Again, have a Happy, Healthy and Safe break and we’ll see you in 2018!

‘Tis the Season…

To be joyful!
Thank you, everyone for coming out to support Quest at the Rudolph the Reindeer Run! We had an incredible turn out and it was so nice to see all the smiling faces.

Teaching this week: Mrs. Alexander

Dates to Remember
Mon  Dec 3: Beginning the 3rd grade service project (more info below)
Tues Dec 4:
Wed  Dec 5: STEM Lab
Thurs Dec 6: Library (don’t forget library books!)
                     T-shirt tie-dying
Fri  Dec 7:  Dollar Dress Down for the Angel Tree
                    Early Out

Pet Food Drive
Each year, students at Quest complete at least two service projects. This project is very near and dear to me, as we are partnering with the Shepherd’s Bowl Community Kitchen. A need that we have identified at the Kitchen is for a variety of supplies to care for cats and dogs. We will be collecting supplies from now through Wednesday December 13th. Some suggestions for donations are:
– bags of dry dog/cat food (any size)
– collars or leashes
– pet treats
– warm blankets or pet beds
Additionally, a donation of pet food coupons has been made, so if it is more convenient to make a monetary donation please do so at the Q1 office. We will use any donations in conjunction with the donated coupons to purchase more pet food. Thank you, all, for your support of our project and for the less fortunate in our community.

Gift Ideas
We have noticed that some of the students are starting to need little things like
*  Mechanical pencils (Size 9 Lead),
*  Box of 24 crayons (Our desks don’t have room for the larger boxes, and we will send them home)
*  Box of 12 colored pencils
*  Headphones (Some of the student’s headphones have broken, they have not withstood being dropped well).
Please check with your student and see if they are in need of any of these things.

Grinch-y Days
The holiday season is a joyful and exciting time, and we feel so thankful to be able to share these days with our students. We would like to place extra emphasis on positive behaviors we see. Using Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas, where the Grinch’s heart grows 3 sizes, we will be awarding hearts to students for showing exceptional Responsibility, Kindness, and Respect. Students are challenged to earn 3 hearts from now through December 14th. Each heart earned will be placed on the Grinch outside of our classroom.  We will also use this activity as a transition into our spring semester classroom management program. After the winter break, our classroom will continue to focus on the positive behaviors students exhibit. Students will earn tickets throughout the week, then redeem the tickets for classroom store currency.

Reading
Weekly Focus: Leadership
This week’s essential question: How can one person change the way you think?
Shared Reading: Jane’s Discovery
Literature Anthology: Finding Lincoln

This week, our comprehension strategy is Visualizing and our skill is Cause and Effect.
Our spelling words will focus on r-controlled vowels.

Math
Last week, we began multiplication by learning the foundational strategies. This week, we will continue with multiplication by applying the strategies to solve multiplication problems. We will also begin the 1 minute challenges of Multiplication Madness. Review and reassessment will continue for those who have not reached Mastery on perimeter and/or multiplication strategies.
We have completed our pilot period for PathBlazer Math. This week, we will be starting our new pilot in a program the kids are familiar with. From now, through the next several weeks, we will be using Front Row Ed as our independent, differentiated program.

Homework
At least 20 minutes of reading every day! Comprehension and overall academic success is linked to the amount of time a child spends reading. Prodigy is updated with our current objectives. Please dedicate at least 15 minutes of battle time at least 3 nights this week.

Work hard. Be kind.

Scholastic Book Orders
We are going to do a quick book order this week.  This is a great  opportunity to purchase books at a fabulous price for Christmas.  We will submit the order Friday, December 1st at 9:00.  This will insure that they arrive before Christmas.  If your order is a surprise for Christmas, just let us know.  We will put Christmas Surprises to the side, in a bag, and email you that your purchase has arrived.  If you don’t already have a book tradition, this is a great year to start one.

We have noticed that some of the students are starting to need little things like
*  Mechanical pencils (Size 9 Lead),
*  Box of 24 crayons (Our desks don’t have room for the larger boxes, and we will send them home)

Math
In Math, We will be starting Multiplication and Multiplication Madness. We know that many of you have started memorizing your facts, and are working on multiplication and division in Relfex, but we also need to insure that you understand how and why multiplication works.   We will also be reviewing, and reteaching perimeter.

Pathblazer is still the program we are piloting, and will be until Christmas.  We will let you know when we start the next pilot.

Homework:  Please read every night for 20 minutes.  It’s so important for comprehension, fluency, and word attack skills. Remember your child only needs to read on the days you would like them to be successful!   Prodigy and/or Frontrowed.com are both perfect places to practice things that we’ve learned in school.

Have a wonderful week!  Remember Choose Kind!
