Parents: Sign Up to Share Your Job with Our Class for Career Day!

Screen Shot 2015-10-04 at 2.12.38 PM
We have been talking a lot in class about neighborhood jobs and citizenship (which, of course, includes contributing as a working citizen of our community).  In light of these classroom discussions, we would love for several of our parents to come share information about their jobs with our class!  This is always a highlight of our academic year!

No pressure!
Please know that you only need to fill about 15 minutes
of time with information about your job, including time for questions/answers! The time goes by VERY quickly!
We welcome you to share any props, tools, visual representations, uniforms, etc. to help your career come to life for the children, but these things are not necessary.  Many jobs that parents may feel are “unexciting” may actually be fascinating for students to hear about and help to give the students a closer look at the “adult world!” It would be wonderful to give the children exposure to a broad range of careers!

When you arrive at the school, be sure to check in at the office and receive your “volunteer” name badge.

If you would like to sign up to volunteer, please e-mail me (anelson@questac.org) with the date and time that would work for you.  The available days/times are as follows:

Homework (Oct. 5-9)

Kids love rocks!  And I love that we study about the uses of rocks and soil in 1st grade!  I’ve asked the students to find and bring in two rocks by Monday, October 5.  The first rock can be interesting and unique because it will be used to sort by observable properties (size, color, texture etc.) and to practice counting by 10′s by making groups of ten rocks.  The second rock will be used in an art project to make pet rocks, so it should be somewhat smooth and big enough to glue and paint on, but not so big that it’s too heavy in a backpack (no bigger than the size of a slice of bread).  They will probably get attached to their rocks, so please write your name on both rocks.  🙂  Thank you!

1-
Math Homework:
*Complete every other problem (alternate between evens and odds) on the worksheets that will be coming home in the homework folder on Monday Sept. 28 (No need to print anything out).  Please make sure you are going through the homework with your student to verify they are understanding.
*Practice your math facts (addition and subtraction) regularly by utilizing any of the math facts activities listed here: Math Facts Activities (You might try activity #7: Front Row Ed Fact Practice if you haven’t already.  Students who don’t like being timed are really liking this one!  Our class code is tcri3k)

Reading Strategies

Eagle eyeThis week we introduced our first reading strategy, EAGLE EYE.  When reading if you don’t know a word, what can you do?  Look at the pictures for a clue.

Have your student read to you.  And anytime your student is reading remind them to practice their EAGLE EYE strategy when they come to a word they do not know, look at the picture for clue.

More strategies to come…

It’s all about the children!

At Quest Academy we believe in being an integral part of the community. We know our students will achieve more with the help and support of local businesses. We invite all interested parties to take part in assisting the rising generation at Quest Academy to succeed.

The student body at Quest Academy would benefit from local businesses in many ways. The greatest needs are as follows:

  • donating time at the school by reading with students
  • donating time at the school by teaching students college and career ready skills especially in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math
  • opening business for field trip experiences especially in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math
  • monetary donations
  • resource donations–especially those resources to assist in teaching Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math
