High Frequency Sight Words

I apologize for any confusion on the sight words for this week.  Due to the break times we had off, we have had to add a few more words onto our lists each week.  The HFW Timed Sheet has all of the high frequency words for this week.  The words are:  may, only, most, its, made, over, family, who, could. Please have your children pick which ones they would like to use for their homework.

Also, for the spelling sentence test.  In Spelling City, when your student click on “Assignments” in the top right corner it will pull up the normal Week 14 Spelling List and also the Spelling List 14 Sentence Practice.  The kids can practice writing these sentences and I will use one of the exact same sentences for the sentence test.

Weekly Reminders

Pg57a_color
Here are a few updates and reminders:

1- Please dress your child properly for the weather.  We strongly recommend labeling coats, gloves, etc.

2- TUESDAY:  Library
day-There are a few students who checked out books that have not been returned and will be put on a suspension not to be able to check out a library book if their book is not returned.  Please send them with your children.

3-FRIDAY:
Spelling and Sort test Homework due

4-In order to enrich your child’s educational experience, I ask for voluntary donations of supplies.  We are currently in desperate need of paper towels, reams of paper, magic erasers, and the most important to the kids-small prizes for the prize box that the children can earn daily.  Please feel free to clean out your kids toy box and donate any gently used, new, etc. toys such as kids meal toys for the classroom prize box.

5- All homework will be considered late after the due date, as per the disclosure. Late work will lose 10% of the score possible for each day that it is late, after the 5th day-no credit will be given.
If your child is sick, they may have as many days to make up their work as they were absent, without losing points. It can be very overwhelming for a student to fall behind, so please help your child develop good habits and complete their homework on time.

6- We are still collecting Box Tops, Labels for Education, My Coke Rewards, and Tyson Chicken.  Thanks for your support!  Whichever grade has the most earns a free “dress down” coupon for the quarter!

Week of January 20th – 23rd

Homework this week is due Friday, January 23rd:

1- Math Homework: Please look for, READ, and SIGN an information sheet on Addition Strategy Timings which will be sent home in your child’s blue homework folder on Tuesday, January 20th. This sheet will be kept in their blue homework folder so you’ll know what flashcards to practice that week.  Please make sure your children are bringing their blue homework folder home and back to school every day.  Here is the link to print your student the flash cards if you need it again:  Addition Flash Cards

The “Math Facts Recording Sheet” below will be sent to me electronically, so there’s no need to print it out.  Make sure to fill this out and type your child’s name on it.  Thank you!

If your child has their doubles, near doubles, and “make a ten” flashcards memorized, the next addition strategy to practice would be their “nines”.  When adding with a nine, student’s should “make a ten” in their head by taking 1 away from the addend that isn’t a nine.  (Example: 9 + 5 is the same as 10 + 4).  Practice as needed:   Nines

5-Timed Fluency Practice.  This daily one-minute timed fluency reading will help your student become a fluent reader.  It will also count for reading minutes. Click here: HFW Week 13

Reading homework and High Frequency Spelling Words January 5th – 9th

This week, we will only be doing reading homework and Vocabulary Spelling City. There will be no math or word sort homework.  Your child can practice spelling words for Week 12 via Spelling City for the test on Friday. Your child may also use the High Frequency Time Sheet below:
HFW Week 12

I strongly encourage practicing 1-minute reading timings using the following link (use the Level 100 passages):

http://www.haslett.k12.mi.us/education/components/scrapbook/default.php?sectiondetailid=11283&

Select any Level 100 reading passage.  Instruct your child to begin reading the passage as quickly as he/she is able.  Allow your child one minute to read as much of the passage as possible.   Subtract any words read incorrectly from the total number of words read during the one-minute timing.  It is a good idea to chart your progress.  Your child should be reading 69 words-per-minute by the end of this school year.

It is also helpful to ask comprehension questions after your child is done reading, such as “What is the main topic in the reading passage?” or “What are some things your learned from the reading?”  It is also a great idea to ask your child to try to summarize the passage in chronological order.

This strategy will greatly help your child prepare for the DIBELS reading tests that will be coming up in January and April.  Thank you, and happy reading! :)
