A message from our librarian

Dear Parents,

As you enter the front doors of Q1, you will notice a large tree just outside of the library. You may be wondering why I have put together this massive tree. I call it the “Tree of Imagination”, and it is my hope that this will be another fun way to promote reading with our students. As of now the tree is “leafless”. The leaves will be contributed by the students. This is how it will work:

1. First, the requirement to get a “leaf” on the tree is to read 3 books.
2. Once a student has read 3 books, he/she will fill out a leaf (which is really an open book template) from the library with the title of each book and the student’s name.
3. The student then gives the completed leaf to the librarian for a small prize, and I will put his/her leaf on the tree.
The students need to keep track of what they are reading, and then they can come to the library and fill out a leaf. I am asking the students to show integrity with the books they read. As participation is not required, it is a choice, and it is therefore their responsibility. With the younger grades I would expect help from parents to keep them motivated and on track.

The students have asked if the books they read have to be from our library or if they can be from home. The books can be from anywhere as long as they are appropriate for the student’s age/reading level.

I want this tree to grow throughout the year, and I will be changing the colors of the leaves as we pass through each season. We will start with fall colors, then move to white or gray for winter, and finally to green in the spring.

I hope we can count on your support to help our tree grow and to show everyone who walks through the front doors what fabulous readers we have here at Quest.

Enterovirus Information

Dear Parents,

I just wanted you to be aware that the enterovirus is now affecting Utah. Please know that if a child has a cold and then complains about having a hard time breathing, they need to see a doctor. I will monitor the children closely here at school for any red flags. We will be talking about the necessity to wash hands vigorously for 20 seconds after bathroom use. I will have children call home if I am concerned about this virus.  Please visit the CDC and/or Enterovirus Fact Sheet for more information.

I plan to keep our classroom clean and sprayed to deter the virus from affecting us.  Because this virus is different than others, we will need a few more classroom donations.  If you can donate an item, please reply to this post so others can see what still needs to be donated.

Items:
*2 Hand sanitizers (alcohol greater than 80%), sold at stores such as Walgreen’s
*3 containers of rubbing alcohol (at least 60% alcohol)
*Empty spray bottle
*2 rolls of paper towels

Homework Sorts

Dear Parents, We have had new students added to class and therefore have to assess them for their levels. Due to this, the Words Their Way sorts lists will not be posted to my blog to complete the sorting homework until this Friday. This will allow time for the necessary assessments to all take place for leveling accurately. Thank you so very much for your patience and help with this. We have been working on their sorts together in class to familiarize them with what they will be sorting at home. Please have your children continue reading their 20 minutes at night. This can be done with books at home or by logging into Raz-Kids. Raz-Kids would be the reading I would encourage so that it they are reading to their accurate reading abilities. To log into Raz-Kids, you will type or copy this website address: http:/www.raz-kids.com/main/Login It should automatically pull up our class. If it doesn’t, my teacher username is anelson74. Type that in and hit “GO”. Then click on your child’s name. I will have each of their passwords for Raz-Kids in their Homework folders. There is also a math page each week on what we are covering for the kids to complete and return each Friday. It is imperative that your child is taking home their homework folder each night and returning it the following morning.
