Week of March 9 – 13

Important parking lot reminder.  We have had several issues with unsafe practices in the parking lot during drop off and pick up.  We want every student to be as safe as possible.  Please watch the following video reminder of parking lot procedures and safety so that we can avoid any unfortunate accidents.

Don’t forget Friday is our maturation class.  Parents are invited to attend.  Girls will be meeting in the Q1 gym at 8:40.  Boys will then meet in the gym at 9:40.  Many students are nervous about this event.  It may be helpful to address some of their concerns beforehand, so they know more of what to expect. Information about the specific topics is found at the following link. http://qacblogs.org/jelaine.hales/files/2020/02/2019-Maturation-Consent-ADA2.pdf

Week of March 2nd- 6th

Wow!  Is it really March already?
We are certainly getting Spring Fever in Room 226.  Even though the weather is starting to hint at spring, and we all want to be in the fresh air, it is important that we stay focused and keep working hard to do our best. It has been great to see academic progress from each student in his or her own way.  I look forward to seeing more growth as we head toward the final quarter of school.

Week of February 23rd – 28th

Here’s a few notes about what is happening in our class this week:
Don’f forget about the book order.  You can return the order form to me, or order directly from the website.  Orders are due February 28th.  The class site is at the following link:
https://orders.scholastic.com/W8P64
Most of the students have returned the maturation permission form. If you still need to sign and return it would you please do so as soon as possible. Even if you do not want your child to attend, the form needs to be signed and returned with the box stating your choice selected. If you have not seen the form, or your child has lost it, you can go  link  where you can print it, or I can give a new page to your child. They only need to ask me.

Due to another obligation I will not be tutoring on Tuesday this week. It will be held on Wednesday instead. We are focusing on long division right now, which is still a challenge for many students, so if your child could use some extra help they are welcome to stay from 3:00 -3:30 on WEDNESDAY.

Math:
We are multiplying decimals by whole numbers.  The students will learn that all they have to do is multiply like normal, then make sure the answer has the same number of decimal places as the decimal places of the factors.

We are still doing our Little Caesars Pizza fundraiser. It is really important to our school, as the money we raise (or don’t raise) will determine if we are able to do field trips and special activities at the school. It really is a good deal for anyone who ever purchases pizza from Little Caesars. If your child has lost their order form,  there should be an attachment in an email sent from POQA, or they can get more at the office.

Week of February 18th – 21st

I hope everyone had an enjoyable long weekend.  Because it is a short week this week, we have a lot to get done in not much time.

A few announcements:
As we didn’t quite reach our Little Caesars goal, the fundraiser will be extended until Friday, February 28th.  For every three cards sold by elementary students, they will receive a prize. Dr. Dave and Mrs. Angelee introduced the prizes to the students today, and they seemed very excited to continue selling.  Students who had already sold three or more cards received them today. Students in the Jr. High will have their name entered into a drawing for a $100 gift card for every three cards sold. Also, the top three classes will win a pizza and ice cream party.
The Little Caesars Breadstick cards are $10 and gives you 10 bags of breadsticks and crazy sauce. These usually cost over $4. This gives you a savings of over $30. Quest makes $7 off of every card students sell. The money raised for this fundraiser helps with field trips, field day, after school clubs and other school activities. These cards make great gifts for neighbors, friends, and family members.

Frozen Fun and Field Trips!

Hello All,
I’m glad we all made it through this wild week of winter weather!  We had a great field trip and enjoyed a week of inside recess.

Today your student brought home information about the maturation lessons we will be having on March 13th.  This will be taught by a nurse,  and boys and girls will be taught separately.  The girl session will begin at 8:40 and the boy session will begin at 9:40.  The form has more information about specifics, and options for parents to decide if they would like their child to attend.  Each student must return the signed form with the parents decision indicated.  Here is a link to the form, incase your child has misplaced it.

Don’t forget we have our class Valentine’s Day party on Friday.     We will be having ice cream sundaes and playing games.  Many students still need the permission form filled out so they can attend.  If you have not already done so, please fill it out as soon as possible.  The link is here: Valentine’s Day Party Permission Form
Students may bring valentines to exchange with each of their classmates.  We currently have 25 students in our class.  Students should  also bring a container to collect valentines from their classmates.  They can bring anything they want, and decorate it however they want.  Just make sure it has the child’s name visible.  We will be having a fun time at our party, and it will be even better if more people can sign up to bring things.  The link for the signup sheet can be found here:

This upcoming week we will be learning a lot of great stuff, here’s a preview:                                                                                                                                        Math:    We will be learning about dividing fractions.  This may sound a bit daunting, but really it is pretty simple if you remember, ” Keep, Switch, Flip.”     This means when dividing fractions, keep the first number the same,  switch the division symbol for multiplication, and flip the second number, so that the numerator is now the denominator, and the denominator is the numerator.  See, clear as mud!  Don’t worry, we’ll have it down by the end of the week.                                                                                                                   *Also, please remember we have  math tutoring every Tuesday after school, from 3:00  – 3:30. We are currently focusing on long division.  If you know that is something your child needs help with, they are invited to stay and get some extra help.

* Science:  We are continuing our landforms unit.  Take a chance to point out interesting landforms you might see, and talk about where they came from. Maybe your student could teach you a thing or two!
*Social Studies:  We are working on map skills.  Learning how to use map legends, understanding directions, and finding places, on maps.                                                         Thanks for everything you do!  Let’s have a wonderful week!

We we be on the field trip all day, so please make sure that your child brings a sack lunch.

Hello Everyone! We had another great week of learning!
I hope you all  stay warm and safe this weekend, and do something positive to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day.  We had a great discussion about him and watched a large portion of the “I Have a Dream” speech in class this afternoon.   Take a few minutes to speak about the importance of treating everyone with respect as we remember Dr. King.

Remember that students don’t have school on Monday, January 2oth or Friday, January 24th.  They will also have an early release day on Thursday, January 23rd.

Because we are having such a short week, we will not be starting a new ELA unit, but we will be learning about the branches of our government in preparation for our upcoming field trip.
Speaking of which, if you have not yet filled out the field trip permission from, please do so as soon as possible.  You can find it at this link:
Field Trip Permission Form

We still need 4 more chaperones, so if you are interested in coming with us, please indicate it on the form.
Thank you to those of you who have already signed up for Parent – Teacher Conferences.  If you have not already done so, please follow the link below to sign up for your time.  I look forward to meeting with you.

We will continue learning about multiplying fractions.  This week we’ll investigate finding area with fractions.  Most of the class has done pretty well understanding the basics, so we should do pretty well expanding our understanding.

Thank you for everything you do!  Let’s have a great week!

Back to School!

Hello All,
We’ve had a great 1st week of school for the new year.  For the most part the kids have come back ready to learn and finish up the school year strong.  Thank you for everything you do as parents to help your children succeed.

Just a few reminders:
Our weather is crazy and changeable.  Please be aware of the weather forecast each day and make sure your children are dressed appropriately.  It is especially important for them to have warm coats and gloves on cold days.

We have a really fun activity coming up for STEM.  If anyone in your family got new shoes recently, and you still have the shoebox, would you please send it to school with your student.  We need them by this coming Thursday, January 16th.

Parent Teacher Conferences will be held on Tuesday, January 28th and Thursday, January 30th, from 3:30pm-7:30pm.  Please follow the link below to sign up for a time.

Field Trip!!!
On Tuesday, February 4th, the entire 5th grade will be going on a Field Trip to Salt

Lake City.  We will be touring the State Capitol as well as the Clark Planetarium. We
will be renting busses to provide our transportation.  Busses will be leaving the school
promptly at 8:45am and returning to the school by 2:45pm. We will have lunch at the
State Capitol, so each student will need to provide their own home lunch and a pack
to carry it in.   If you would like to have the school provide a sack lunch, you need to
email me directly by Monday, January 27th. Students will still need a pack to carry their
lunch.
To help cover the cost of the field trip, we are asking for a donation of $5 per student and chaperone who attends. The donations can be paid to either the Q1 or Q2 office.  For this field trip we are only able to take five chaperones per class. If you are available to attend as a chaperone please indicate below and I will take the first five adults who sign the form and pay the $5 donation.  Please bring your receipt to me to let me know you have paid.
Please complete the form below indicating whether or not your student will be allowed to attend and that you understand the requirement for this field trip.

State Capitol Field Trip Permission Form

As a side note, on May 27th, the 5th grade will be taking the FrontRunner to Ogden for
our Field Day activities.  We will be going to the Solomon Center at the Junction.
Students will be participating in IFly, IRock, and Flow Rider.  At this time the cost will be $15 per student. As the activity gets closer we will use any extra field trip funds to help cover the cost so the cost might go down, depending on previous donations.   Please put this on your calendar and help your students earn money to attend this field day experience.

Math
This week we are learning about multiplying fractions.  We will be investigating different ways of looking at it, but the most important thing for the students to understand is that you simply multiply straight across, numerator x numerator and denominator x denominator.  See the link below for a video with more information.
