More “er” words….

Here are some more “er” words to use for word work this week.  (some are review words from previous weeks, that is why they are not “er”) *Remember you only need to use 15-20 of them in your assignments but I suggest you choose words that you struggle with so that the activities will be beneficial. 🙂

Tonight’s homework

Tonight the students should be doing their Wednesday Online Words Their Way submission as well as 20 mins of Prodigygame.com.  The usernames and passwords are listed under the “student stuff” tab and then under Passwords and Login info, then Prodigy.  They should also be filling out their reading calendars nightly.
If there are any problems with getting the homework done online please let me know because otherwise I enter a zero in the grade book for not having it complete.
I also have a updated-disclosure for you to sign and return to make sure that everyone is aware of the policies, procedures and expectations of the classroom.  If you could print it, sign it and have it returned by Monday, at the latest, that would be fabulous.

We started a class novel study today on The Westing Game.  It is a mystery and im hoping the students find it as interesting as I do.  We did a little bit of pre reading discussion today but hopefully tomorrow we can get more into it.
We also presented our science activities on animal variations.  It was very interesting and informative to have the students be the teacher.
In math we worked on powers and exponents.  Most of the students understood the concept but struggled with finding the value of numbers in exponential form. (Ex: 2^3= 2*2*2=8)
Please make sure to check SIS regularly to make sure your child doesn’t have any missing assignments.  They will be held in from Friday Fun for any missing assignments.
Also, the students have earned 10 compliments and therefore have chosen a class reward of 30 minutes electronics time. We’ve decided to do this the last 30 minutes of class on Thursday.  The students are not required to bring an electronic device from home but are welcome to.  They will be responsible for it and it will be kept in their locker until the designated time.  They are also welcome to bring a card game to play instead if they’d like.

Well another week has come to an end…

Today was AWESOME!  The kids were absolutely amazing and they were everything I knew they could be.  After lunch things got a little crazy but I will take it!  We will continue to work on what is expected and how it should look and sound.  Today I recorded them while they were in STEM lab and we talked about what we saw and heard.  They all agreed that we need to work on our listening skills and that we need to be aware of out body language and how we are fidgeting.
Our lining up and walking in the hall was EXCEPTIONAL!
I introduced STEM roles and explained that we will do a STEM project a month where everyone will have a role.  That role will change with each new activity.  We also talked about the importance of working together to improve our creations instead of “being the best.”  It should be a fun year of interesting and exciting projects.  Teamwork is ALWAYS the hardest part of STEM activities. 🙂
This was our first “Fun Friday/Study Hall” and for those who had missing work 20/24 it was not “FUN”.  I think the next time we have “Fun Friday” there will be less kids with missing work. 😉  A lot of kids said that they were not aware that they were supposed to do spelling homework this week but I specifically posted it on my blog so everyone would be aware.  Hopefully next week there won’t be any confusion.  Some of the students were able to finish their missing assignments during “Study Hall” but others were not.  If they finished, I gave them credit for the assignment, if they didn’t it will be a zero in the grade book.
I am also going to try to do as much online homework as possible for math because it makes it so much easier to submit and keep track of on both my and the students’ part.  Hopefully that will start next week as well.  It just depends if the frontrowed.com has the corresponding assignments that I need them to do.  We have begun prime factorization and exponents which seems to be a little bit of a challenge.  If your child still has not mastered their multiplication facts, please stress the importance of mastering that this year, it will benefit them immensely as we move forward in math.

Have a bea”UTE”ful weekend and I will see everyone on Monday.  Go UTES!

Thursday September 8, 2016

Tonight’s homework is the following:
Thursday Sort Online
Read 20
Math Worksheet (Prime Factorization)
Spelling Test tomorrow (AR spelling pattern/ 15 random pattern words and 5 high frequency words)

We struggled today with staying quiet as a class.  We practiced lining up and walking without talking.  I’m hoping we can have it mastered soon.  I know this class is amazing we just need to work on making sure everyone else sees it!
We also worked on our animal variations assignment in groups today.  Ask you child how it went and what they are presenting on!  I will post more on their portfolios when they are completed.  If you have not checked your child’s online portfolio, please do so, you will be able to see all of the work that they are doing in class, including the last math test we took yesterday. 🙂

Tuesday, September 6, 2016

This week I have begun word work homework.  I would like the students to pick 15-20 words from the list of “ar” words posted on my blog and do the word work activity for Tuesday under the homework tab and then weekly Words Their Way online submission, then click on the “submit here” link under Tuesday.  They will be typing a story using the 15-20 words they’ve selected, paying close attention to capitalization and punctuation.  When they finish, they can simply submit it to me and there is no paper homework to worry about.

We will also be having our first math test tomorrow on chapter 1.  We will review in class today everything that will be on the test tomorrow.  It will cover all that we’ve talked about on place value, decimal place value, expanded form, word form and picture form.

I just wanted to post some ar words that the kids could use this week as we begin our spelling homework.  I would see which ones your child struggles with and have them focus on those but also encourage them to notice the “at” spelling pattern in other words they may encounter throughout the week, since we are working more on mastering the pattern than the words themselves.
