Standard 4.NBT.1 – Place Value (multiplication by 10, 100, etc.)

Standard 4.NBT.1

Recognize that in a multi-digit whole number, a digit in one place represents ten times what it represents in the place to its right. For example, recognize that 700 ÷ 70 = 10 by applying concepts of place value and division.

Explanation: We are teaching place value, and how to read large numbers. We also show students that if you have a digit in the ones place and move it over to the tens place, you are multiplying by 10.

So if you have a 7, and you move it left to the tens place by adding a 0, it becomes 70. By moving the 7 from the ones to the tens place it was multiplied by 10.

Also, if you move numbers to the right, you are dividing by 10. If you have 700, and you move the seven one digit to the right it becomes 70, and 700/70=10.
