In math, we are exploring teen numbers. We will also be mastering counting to 100 by 10’s. We are also making great progress on our individual math pathways (ask us about the standard we are working on).

In technology, we are recording ourselves reading using the SeeSaw app. We look forward to our science and STEM lessons. We are exploring forces and working to solve problems together in groups. We look forward to completing our forces unit with a visit from Discovery Gateway. They will have several fun forces activities for us.

4- We are now beginning Unit 3 in Language Arts. Below are the power words, oral vocabulary words, letters, and sounds we will be mastering during the next 3 weeks. We will continue working on syllables, rhyming, identifying the beginning and ending sounds of words, and blending sounds to read words. We have learned most of our sound wall sounds and use our sound wall to help us spell and read words. In math, we are learning different ways to make 10 and comparing greater than and less than with numbers and objects. We are starting math pathways which will allow us to work on our math lessons at our own pace. And in science, we are exploring forces. We have discovered that there are pushes and pulls in any kind of work and that machines can help a job get done faster. We will apply what we are learning about forces as we work to control a “wrecking ball’s” push to solve a tricky problem.

Halloween parade on Monday, October 31. Please note that this is an early out day. Because the parade will start at 9:00am, we ask that students come to school already dressed in their costumes.

For those who would like to watch the parade, please plan on bringing camping chairs or blankets. You are welcome to set them up along the outside of either building (see map below—the yellow dots indicate where families can sit).

Costume guidelines:

Costumes should be modest and without blood or gore. Students are welcome to paint their faces and wear Halloween masks; however, those masks will only be worn when directed to do so by the classroom teacher (e.g. during the parade, when a class picture is taken, etc). Weapons and anything that depicts violence are not allowed on school property (knives, guns, swords, spears, etc.). If you have questions about costume accessories, please contact us. Just to reiterate, no blood, either depicted on the costume or in makeup, is allowed.

Library & Parent Teacher Conferences

Hello Kindergarten Families! This week our class checked out books from the school library. Here are a few things to note about library:

Library books are due every Wednesday  Checking out books from our school library is a privilege. To check out books students are expected to:
1- Follow the library rules (be respectful, follow directions, use a library voice, etc.)
2- Return library books (no outstanding books)
3- Select a book during the allotted time

We encourage you to visit with your child about safe ways to store their library book in their backpack. Books can easily be damaged due to leaky water bottles.

Parent teacher conferences will be on October 26 & 27. Each meeting will be 15 minutes long, and you are welcome to bring your kindergartener. Here is the link to sign up for a time to meet: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30E0C4FABA62AA6F58-fall1

Here’s a quick overview of what we learned last week:

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is Screen-Shot-2021-09-25-at-8.50.50-AM.png

Comprehension strategy: “Ask and Answer Questions” . We read informational texts and a tale to go along with our theme “How do tools help us to explore?”

Review of High-Frequency Words: (please continue to practice) “see”, “we”, “I”, “can”, “the”, “a”)

Phonics: Sound and Spelling of Pp. Blending words with the letters: m, p, a, s, t.

Phonemic Awareness: How to produce the sounds: /th/ (as in feather), /k/, short /u/, and /d/. We look in the mirror to see how our mouth forms these sounds including what our tongue, teeth, and lips are all doing. We work all year on rhyming words, chunking words into syllables, first, middle and last sounds we hear in words, adding, taking away, and replacing words in compound words, and blending 2-4 sounds to make a word (consonant-vowel-consonant or CVC words), and breaking apart words into individual sounds.

Vocabulary: discover, defeated, fetch, tools, rumble.

Math: Lesson 5 “Make 3, 4, and 5”. Numbers can be thought of as being made up of a combination of other numbers. Thinking of numbers this way will help prepare students for adding and subtracting numbers.
