First Grade Club Information

Dear Parents/Guardians,
We just wanted to give you a heads up.  We will be starting the first session of our First Grade Club starting in October.  This will be an after school science/art club.  We will be posting the club contract on our blogs this upcoming Tuesday, September 20th.

Club contracts need to be turned in to the Q1 office as soon as possible, the last day we will accept them is September 30th.  It will be a first come first served basis.

The first 20 contracts turned in will be contacted.  If your child is accepted there will be a $5 fee associated along with rules to follow.

Club will be every Thursday from 3:00-3:55pm.  Pick up is at 4:00pm sharp.  Students will participate in a variety of science experiments and art projects.

There will be another session of club after we come back from winter break around January/February.  So, if you miss this first session there will be one more opportunity.

Animal Reports

Just a reminder:  Animal Reports are due with homework tomorrow!  All information, including the printable form, is posted here below:

Below is a list of the animals your student has selected to complete their animal report on.  If your child was absent, we assigned them an animal.  Please assist your child in researching their animal. We encourage you to help them find the information in various sources (books, encyclopedias, internet, etc.) rather than stating what they know or believe to be true.
Click here to learn about your animal on the Hogle Zoo website:
Meet the Hogle Zoo Animals.
Here is another fun animal website:

Encourage your child to use their best handwriting. The reports will be shared with the class on Friday, September 16th.  Your child may find it beneficial to practice reading their report to you prior to reading it for our class.  Included in their blue homework folder on Friday was the animal report form and a scratch writing paper with the student selected animal. ** HOGLE ZOO FIELD TRIP **
cartoon_animals_05We just wanted to thank all the parents who have so graciously made their YEARLY field trip  donation. If you haven’t had a chance to pay your donation to the office,  please do so ON OR BEFORE FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 16th. If  you are unable to donate the $15 at this time, feel free to donate $5 for now. The cost for the bus transportation is over $700. That does not include the Hogle Zoo entrance fees. Again we have so many fun
field trips planned, we would hate to have to
cancel them for lack of funds.

  • Parent Volunteers:                                                                        We are ALWAYS looking for more volunteers so don’t be shy. You may join your child’s group to help with the group management. Please click on the link below to see which group your student is in and which parent chaperones are over each group. Chaperones:  If your cell phone number is not correct please email Mrs. Nelson to update it on the field trip form in case we need to reach you and your group.

  • Important Details:                                                                        We will be lining up and heading out to the buses at 8:40. We need to be back to the bus by 1:30.  will be doing a quick student count so we make sure we have everyone, then be back on the way so we won’t be late for end of day dismissal.
  • If you are a volunteer, PLEASE plan on being here by 8:15 so we can give you your student list and go over any last minute details.
  • If you would like to bring a younger sibling,  you will need to plan on driving your own car. In years past, the entrance fee for parent volunteers has been covered by Quest, however,  please plan on bringing funds to pay for anyone OTHER your student(s) just in case.
  • Students need to bring a DISPOSABLE SACK LUNCH with their name on it.
  • Volunteers, you will need to bring some sort of bag or backpack in which to carry your assigned group of student’s lunches in. You may eat lunch with your students whenever they get hungry.

Buddy Books

bookParents,

I just sent home their FIRST baggy book this week. Another teacher was so kind enough to let me try them out this year. These will sometimes seem much lower than your child’s ability, this is done for a reason.  We want the students to be able to look and say the word with just a quick glance, and practicing with these early readers does the trick.  Please read the parent letter and BE VERY CAREFUL with these books. As they are not mine, I will have to charge a $35 dollar fee to replace her books for her.  The buddy books will be changed daily in the mornings if the sign off sheet is signed- the students are bringing home the same books today to practice.  Students should be turning in their homework folders each morning with their buddy books inside.  I cannot emphasize enough that great care must be taken with this books.  Thank you in advance for understanding.

Hogle Zoo Field Trip Reminder

Zoo EntranceOur Hogle Zoo Field trip will be Thursday, September 22nd. We are still in need of field trip donations. Please pay your $4.00 donation to the Q1 office.  Thank you!

With the date change we understand that chaperone availability may have changed also.  We are requesting ALL chaperones to sign-up on our Zoo Field Trip volunteer form.  We are only allotted 5 chaperone spots on the bus, we already have our chaperone bus riders.  All other parents are welcome to drive their own vehicle to the zoo or carpool with other parents.  These are the following chaperones we have coming already…and THANK YOU!
**We would prefer having at least two more chaperones to pair up, if you would be able to chaperone and help one of the existing chaperones please email Mrs. Nelson asap****

Homework 9/12-9/16

Homework this week is due on Friday, September 16:

1- Math Homework:
  • Worksheets: Please look in your child’s blue folder on Monday for worksheets with concepts that have been taught in class.  The purpose of this homework is for a quick review, some practice, and a chance for parents to see what their child is learning in math.  Please complete every other problem (alternate between evens and odds so your child gets practice doing story problems AND “Vocabulary Check”/ “Test Practice” problems each week).  If your child wants to do every problem they are certainly free to do so! :) Please help your child read the directions/example problems and allow them to talk about the problems as they figure out the answers. Please check your child’s answers for accuracy!

  • With the fluency timing in the plastic sheet protector (“Adding Two’s and Three’s), use a dry-erase marker to practice repeatedly.  Record your best time and score each day. [By the end of first grade, the target goal is to finish all 25 problems in 1 minute and 15 seconds, with 90% accuracy (23 out of 25 problems correct).]  If your child frustrates too easily because it takes too long to complete, have them practice for 2-5 minutes (you can be the judge) and write down how many they finished in that time.  Encourage your child to keep improving on their own score, rather than expecting them to reach the target goal yet.  Click here for extra timings: Fluency Timings

  • For extra practice, utilize any of these math-fact-activities. Front Row Ed and Xtra Math are great tools for practice.

Helpful Hint:  Here’s how we’re learning to “count on” in class when we’re Adding Three’s:
Start with the bigger number and count on  (Example: 3 + 5. Snap your finger and say “5″ and count on 3 more: say “5″ (snap)…”6″…”7″…”8″)

2- Reading 20 minutes per day, record on reading log: Weekly Reading Log
This reading log is for Friday, September 9- Thursday, September 15. Return to school Friday, September 16.

There are several sources for reading: books from home, the public library, reading fluency assignment below, “Buddy Books” sent home daily, and our online reading program Raz-Kids.
Our class login is: anelson74
Password (if requested): rams

3- One Minute Reading Fluency. Students were recently given a one minute reading fluency timing, they then set goals to increase the number of words read correctly in one minute.  This reading fluency homework assignment will help your student reach their goal.  First, print lesson #1 from this link: Phonics Fluency StoriesNext, time your child reading for one minute. If they get to the bottom they will go back to the top and continue reading until the one minute is done. Then, record the number of words read CORRECTLY in one minute. Students do not read the underlined words “Story 1, Story 2, Story 3″. Finally, return the completed fluency page on Friday.

*Want to save paper?  Have your student read the passage on a computer screen and simply record their words per minute on the reading log.

4- Phonics and High Frequency Words.  We will have our first spelling test on Friday, September 16th. Practice using any method of your choice to prepare for the weekly Friday spelling test. Click here for some practice ideasSpelling Study Activities

Phonics Words:
am
man
sad
lap
fat

High Frequency Words:

to
a
the
on

as
it
is

Sentence:
The man sat.

NO SORTS THIS WEEK. We will begin sorts the following week.

Reading Strategies

Chunky monkeyOur tool box of reading strategies is filling up.  We have added “Chunky Monkey”, he helps us look for chunks we know.  Like “key” in monkey and “ing” in sing. We are practicing the reading strategies in our daily reading.  We can ask ourselves, does it sound right, does it look right, and does it make sense.
