Here is a look at what’s happening in our class next week…

Music: Recorders need to be back in the classroom by Monday morning. 

Library: Books that have been checked out are due back every Monday morning. 

Homework: Reading comprehension and chapter summaries (unless you finished your book) on Google Classroom.  Reading 25 minutes daily Mon. – Thurs. Homework is due Thursday night, 1/11.

Math: This week we are working on multiplying fractions and reviewing for our quarter two test, which we will take on Thursday. Feel free to practice at home on Front Row, Prodigy, or/and Reflex. 

Science: We will be working on our magnetism unit! Students will understand that magnetism can be observed when there is an interaction between the magnetic fields of magnets or between a magnet and materials made of iron.

Language Arts: Unit 3 Week 5

Welcome back, Rams! I hope you all a wonderful Christmas break with your family and friends! Since we are coming back to a three day week, we will not have any homework this week, however, you still need to read daily. Just a reminder that January 12th is the last day of the second quarter. Everyone should have finished reading their book report book, or at least be very close. Next week we will be spending time creating book reports in the form of Google slide presentations. 

Our class filled the party puff jar right before we went on break! Good job! You have earned a party and we voted on having time with electronics in class tomorrow. Yay! This can be a device from home, or a school computer. All personal devices need to be kept in lockers before and after the time allotted in class.

Thank you to everyone who donated treats for our class party. It was such a fun day, and we couldn’t have done it without you. This holiday season, I am thankful for the all of the kind words, cute notes, gifts, and hugs I have received. I love my class! Fifth grade rocks!!! I will see you back at Quest on January 3, 2018. Enjoy your time off!

• Magic Show –  We were the only grade to attend a special assembly featuring a magician because we had the most students attend the Reindeer Run! Way to go, fifth graders!!!

Polar Express Party – Parents, don’t forget that you need to sign the permission for in order for your child to have treats at our party on Friday, December 15th. Students can dress in their pajamas, or free dress down that day. They may bring a stuffed animal or pillow. Here is the link for the permission form:

On Friday, December 15 , we will be having a Polar Express Pajama Party!!

We are going to be snuggled up in our pajamas watching the movie, drinking cocoa, and eating cookies. Please remember:
* no slippers- wear regular shoes
* choose pajamas that are dress code appropriate and appropriate for the weather (we will still be going outside for recess)
* bring a pillow or stuffed animal to snuggle with, but it must fit easily in your backpack!

If you would like to donate supplies for the party, we will need Lofthouse (or similar) frosted sugar cookies, marshmallows, spray can whip cream,  and candy canes. Please let me know what you will be donating, (you can mark it on the permission slip) and then send it in by Thursday, Dec. 14 so I know we have everything for the day of the party. Thanks! Please fill out the permission slip form below, so that your child can join the fun.Thanks!

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving break! Here is a look at what’s happening in our class this week…

Homework: Reading comprehension and chapter summaries on Google Classroom.  Reading 25 minutes daily Mon. – Thurs. 

STEM: Our STEM project this month is about the connection between monarch butterflies and milkweed. Monarch caterpillars ONLY eat milkweed. In fact, the monarch butterfly is also known as the “milkweed butterfly.” The milkweed plant provides all the nourishment the monarch needs to transform the Monarch caterpillar into the adult butterfly. This Friday we will be planting our milkweed in egg cartons. We received plenty of them. Thank you!  

Music: Nearly everyone enjoys music, whether by listening to it, singing, or playing an instrument,. There are many benefits to music education, including creative thinking, engagement, improved academic scores, coordination, and emotional development. On Monday we will begin playing the recorder. We will continue practicing tis wind instrument throughout December and January. 

Math: We will continue to work on adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators, as well as solving word problems involving the addition and subtraction of fractions. Practice at home with Front Row, Prodigy, or Reflex. As always, math tutoring is available on Thursday, after school, from 3:00p.m. – 3:30p.m..

Science: We will continue our unit on electricity. 

Language Arts:

• Thank you to all of the parents and students for making our canned food drive a success! Check out the awesome video of our administration getting sundae toppings poured all over their heads on Quest Academy’s Facebook page. 

• Math: This week we began working on adding and subtracting fraction with unlike denominators. We also learned how to convert a mixed number in to a improper fraction. 

• Art: In December, the hallway outside of our classroom will be decorated with artwork that our class has created based on the famous ballet, The Nutcracker. To learn more about the creation of The Nutcracker, check out Wonderopolis.  The Youtube tutorial video for drawing the nutcracker can be found by clicking on this link. 

• The deadline for finishing book report books is the end of the second quarter , which is January 12th. Although there is no homework during Thanksgiving break, it is a great opportunity for catching up on reading, practicing writing on Utah Compose, or working on math skills on Front Row, Prodigy, and Reflex math. 

• Nov. 20-24: Thanksgiving Break, no school! Yay!
