October 29th Conference

Below is the schedule for our Parent-Teacher Conferences for the month of October.

Parent Teacher ConferenceConferences will be held Thursday, October 29th. 

 
If I already had a meeting with you during September Parent-Teacher Conferences, I took your name off the October conference list so that I could give other parents an opportunity to meet with me near the beginning of the school year – I hope that is okay.  So, there are some available time slots.  Please e-mail me if you would like to sign up for one of the available time slots. If this day is not good for you please email me a date and time you could meet with me. I am availabe before or after school by appointment.

Homework for week October 5th-9th


1. Reading (20-30 minutes every day!)
2. Word Sorts
3. Spelling
4. Math
5. Bring 2 rocks to school on Monday October 5th! 


Each week, print out the  Homework Tracker which is found here or under the “Homework Form” tab above. This form does NOT need to be printed or turned in for credit during weeks that we are doing only READING homework. PLEASE right your child’s name at the top of this tracker.

Your child is required to read 20 minutes every night. This could include Raz Kids, reading books at home or our fluency passage. Here is the link to your child’s Fluency Recording sheet. Your child has a number click on your child’s number (at the bottom of the spreadsheet) to record their reading. Your child should know their number.

Each week, print your student’s assigned Word Sort by clicking on the appropriate link below.  Use the Word Sort for the following activities:
  • Monday: Print, cut, and sort your words with an adult and explain this week’s rule. Sort each word under the correct guide word. Some guide words have a C or V combination on them – C stands for consonant and V stands for vowel.
  • Tuesday: Practice the sort and write it on the homework tracker. 
  • Wednesday: Blind Sort (Lay down the guide words and then read the rest of the words aloud without showing them to your child. Your child must indicate where the word goes without seeing it.
  • Thursday: Speed Sort: Time your students three times doing their word sorts and record it on the homework tracker.

  • Study the following “High Frequency Words” using any method you wish in order to prepare for the weekly spelling test on Fridays. There are no review words this week. 
  • There is a list of recommended spelling study activities that you can access BY CLICKING HERE for Spelling Word Activities, but, again, you may use any method you wish.

  • Complete the My Math homework pages one each day and the last two on Thursday. Do all the ODD problems. Get on and do Xtra Math practice. Pins are now under homework- usernames and passwords
  • Please also practice math facts regularly by utilizing any of the math activities that you can access BY CLICKING HERE for Math Activities.  These math facts activities do not need to be documented for homework credit – they are simply a resource to help you practice math fluency on a regular basis. 

Parent Survey and Grade Update

Thank you to all those parent’s who have already gone on and taken the parent survey to tell me how things are going for your child!! I have already read over the ones received and have received a lot of great feedback. If you haven’t gone in and taken it please do so, so that I can make more changes as needed.

As an educator this is one of my favorite parts, as well as the most important, to see how your doing and make changes as needed!

  • A big concern I saw was about grades and being able to make up missing work or assignments that got a low score. Since I am still getting used to everything for Quarter 1 here is what I am wanting to do, and what I will make changes on for Quarter 2.

You may print it off and have your child complete it if it is misisng, or do odd problems if they missed a lot and turn it in for points. 


Starting this week I will staple their work for the week and have them turn it in each day and look it over and allow them to make changes to missed problems during small groups to get more points. This way hopefully assignments won’t get lost and they can continue to work on problems they are having trouble with and fix it. 

Next quarter if your child misses a day when we do an assignment like it says in my disclosure I will allow them to turn it in up to one week from the day they return to school. I will try to write the date due on the top of their missing work.

Science and Math Rock!

rocksKids love rocks!  And I love that we study about the uses of rocks and soil in 1st grade!  I’ve asked the students to find and bring in two rocks by Monday, October 5.  The first rock can be interesting and unique because it will be used to sort by observable properties (size, color, texture etc.) and to practice counting by 10′s by making groups of ten rocks.  The second rock will be used in an art project to make pet rocks, so it should be somewhat smooth and big enough to glue and paint on, but not so big that it’s too heavy in a backpack (no bigger than the size of a slice of bread).  They will probably get attached to their rocks, so please write your name on both rocks.  🙂  Thank you!

At Quest Academy we believe in being an integral part of the community. We know our students will achieve more with the help and support of local businesses. We invite all interested parties to take part in assisting the rising generation at Quest Academy to succeed.

The student body at Quest Academy would benefit from local businesses in many ways. The greatest needs are as follows:

  • donating time at the school by reading with students
  • donating time at the school by teaching students college and career ready skills especially in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math
  • opening business for field trip experiences especially in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math
  • monetary donations
  • resource donations–especially those resources to assist in teaching Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math
