{Earth Science} Project

Published by

Earthquakes, Volcanoes, Tsunamis, Floods, and Tornadoes/Hurricanes OH MY!!

The Earth’s surface is constantly changing. Some changes happen very slowly over long periods of time, such as weathering, erosion, and uplift. Other changes happen abruptly, such as landslides, volcanic eruptions, and earthquakes. All around us, we see the visible effects of the building up and breaking down of the Earth’s surface.

The Project: {400 points total}

There are four components of the project: Research, Presentation, Visual, and Activity. Each component is worth 100 points for a total of 400 points.  Students will be working in groups that are randomly selected and will grade each other as well as receive an overall grade from me. They will have time in class to work on this project, but they are able to work on it at home.

Research: {100 points}

Find out all you can about your event, including: the causes, how it reshapes the earth, the various kinds, landforms created or destroyed, how does technology assist in predicting, weathering, geological changes over time, and so on.  Put all of the data found in an essay format, citing all of your resources. Be sure to put the information in your own words. At least one book must be used and two websites.

Presentation: {100 points}

The information learned from the research portion will be presented to the class. Each person will need to participate in the presenting of information. The presentation should be no longer than 10 minutes.

Visual: {100 points}

The group will decide on the kind of visual that they want to create. Some ideas are a model, poster, powerpoint, Prezi, iMovie, etc. This will give us something to see that will represent the event.

Activity: {100 points}

This is the creative component. Groups can decide to have the class create their own mini-model of the item, a group may decide to have table groups enact a part of the event. There are no bounds…just be sure to get it approved first!

This project is due the week of February 24….

Presentations are as follows:

February 24 9 – 10am : Tornado/Hurricane group {Malya, Lia, Leah, Hannah, Alexus, and Breanna}

February 25 9 – 10am: Volcano Group: {Matthew, Olivia, Jacob, Bowman, and Isaac}

      You can get your book approved anytime you finish work early, during silent reading time, before school, or after school
