Vacation “Homework” Options
If your child is going to be out of school due to vacation, there are several ways you can incorporate academic activities into your travel plans. Review this list with your child and together select and complete at least three items that interest them. 1. Keep a travel log or a vacation journal: keep track of travel times to and from your destination, measure the trip’s distance, write 3 sentences about each day – what was the funniest, scariest, or most interesting that happened. 2. Write post cards to your class or yourself, mail them and compile into a book. 3. Highlight the journey on a map, or collect maps from various locations visited. 4. List license plates as you drive and talk about state’s geographical location. 5. Select 10 photos and write captions for each and show to class. 6. Pick up a local newspaper and find an interesting article. Clip out the article and write a summary of it. 7. Alphabet Scavenger Hunt – write the alphabet vertically on paper and try to write one thingyou see or do on your trip for each letter. 8. Draw a community map an compare it to your own community. 9. Research the area and write a mini-report to share with the class. 10. Focus on the geography and climate/weather of the region. 11. Research the area and write a mini-report to share with the class. 12. Collect artifacts from the area and present them to the class. 13. List/sketch/identify plants and animals you see that are not found in our area. 14. Create a powerpoint/imovie/prezi/keypoint of your trip and present it to the class. 15. Read, Read, Read!
