Homework February 9th – 13th

Homework this week is due on Friday, February 13th:

** As clarification:  our class has been doing the same center work for 4+ months now.  The students have 1 1/2 hours every morning to complete this work during our language arts and math centers time.  If your child comes home and tells you that they need to do Spelling City for Vocabulary or Spelling it is because they chose not do it during their centers time in class.  It is not homework, but work they chose not to do during centers.  My students complete a writing journal, math journal, sort page daily, teacher time, and computer time each day.  I have the majority of my students who finish early and get to participate in free choice. I will not be sending home their writing, math, or sort journals with them as they use them daily.  If your student does not complete their centers work during centers time they will be receiving a zero score for that days work. They will however receive their Spelling City or Vocabulary points should they choose to complete that work at home.**

1- Math Homework:  This week we are back to the printed Math pages as homework due to the lack of participation doing computer only work.  For those students who did the math computer work-thank you!  This week your child can do a few problems every night if it gets overwhelming for them.

2- Reading 20 minutes per day, record on reading log. Please have at least one of the days this week be on RazKids and complete the comprehension quizzes after reading the book.

3- Timed Fluency Practice.  This daily one-minute timed fluency reading will help your student become a fluent reader.  It will also count for reading minutes.

High Frequency Sight Words

I apologize for any confusion on the sight words for this week.  Due to the break times we had off, we have had to add a few more words onto our lists each week.  The HFW Timed Sheet has all of the high frequency words for this week.  The words are:  may, only, most, its, made, over, family, who, could. Please have your children pick which ones they would like to use for their homework.

Also, for the spelling sentence test.  In Spelling City, when your student click on “Assignments” in the top right corner it will pull up the normal Week 14 Spelling List and also the Spelling List 14 Sentence Practice.  The kids can practice writing these sentences and I will use one of the exact same sentences for the sentence test.

Week of January 20th – 23rd

Homework this week is due Friday, January 23rd:

1- Math Homework: Please look for, READ, and SIGN an information sheet on Addition Strategy Timings which will be sent home in your child’s blue homework folder on Tuesday, January 20th. This sheet will be kept in their blue homework folder so you’ll know what flashcards to practice that week.  Please make sure your children are bringing their blue homework folder home and back to school every day.  Here is the link to print your student the flash cards if you need it again:  Addition Flash Cards

The “Math Facts Recording Sheet” below will be sent to me electronically, so there’s no need to print it out.  Make sure to fill this out and type your child’s name on it.  Thank you!

If your child has their doubles, near doubles, and “make a ten” flashcards memorized, the next addition strategy to practice would be their “nines”.  When adding with a nine, student’s should “make a ten” in their head by taking 1 away from the addend that isn’t a nine.  (Example: 9 + 5 is the same as 10 + 4).  Practice as needed:   Nines

Reading homework and High Frequency Spelling Words January 5th – 9th

This week, we will only be doing reading homework and Vocabulary Spelling City. There will be no math or word sort homework.  Your child can practice spelling words for Week 12 via Spelling City for the test on Friday. Your child may also use the High Frequency Time Sheet below:
HFW Week 12

I strongly encourage practicing 1-minute reading timings using the following link (use the Level 100 passages):

http://www.haslett.k12.mi.us/education/components/scrapbook/default.php?sectiondetailid=11283&

Select any Level 100 reading passage.  Instruct your child to begin reading the passage as quickly as he/she is able.  Allow your child one minute to read as much of the passage as possible.   Subtract any words read incorrectly from the total number of words read during the one-minute timing.  It is a good idea to chart your progress.  Your child should be reading 69 words-per-minute by the end of this school year.

It is also helpful to ask comprehension questions after your child is done reading, such as “What is the main topic in the reading passage?” or “What are some things your learned from the reading?”  It is also a great idea to ask your child to try to summarize the passage in chronological order.

This strategy will greatly help your child prepare for the DIBELS reading tests that will be coming up in January and April.  Thank you, and happy reading! :)

December 15th – 19th

Thank you to all of you who returned a copy of your child’s favorite holiday recipe.  I have only received 16 recipes  of the 27 students in our class.  This is for a project we are doing that must go home with them on Friday.  Please email me their recipe as soon as you can and include your student’s name on the recipe.

Also, thank you so very much for those of you who have signed the permission slip for our activities and party this week.  If you haven’t, please make sure to sign the electronic form below.  For the party on Thursday, we are still in need of volunteers from our class to help run the events, set up and take down chairs for the program and provide 27 cupcakes for our class and some treats.  If you can volunteer to help, we would very much appreciate it!  Please contact Lorinda Rodriguez at lrod827@yahoo.com.  The list of what is planned for the party on Thursday following our first grade program is in the document below:

Favorite Holiday Recipe Homework

Friday, December 12th is the last day for your child to receive credit for bringing in the recipe for their favorite holiday treat/dessert.  We will be working on our project with them all through next week.  The students do not need to bring in the prepared treat-just the recipe for it.  They also need to be marked with their name.

December 1 – December 5th

**  Library day is Monday, December 1st for this week only –please send your child’s library books with them so that they can check out a new book **

In our class you are responsible to print the homework organizer, the weekly sort and the math sheets on Monday’s.  Please staple together and return on Friday mornings.  (If you would rather record the math homework answers on the back of one of the organizer sheets I will accept that also)

Weekly Homework Organizer(please print)

We are continuing our differentiating word study program, Words their Way!

Click on the shape of your child’s group.  On the outside of your child’s blue homework folder I have put the shape he or she is in for your convenience right next to their name. (please look at that so that you know what sort to do each day).  Also, make sure you are asking for your child to look at their homework folder each night.  Several children have been placing them back in their desks instead of taking them home each night.

WORD SORTS     (please print your child’s word sort for the week)
Stars
Triangles
Diamonds
Circles
Hearts

Use the Word Sort for the following activities.
  • Monday: Print, cut, and sort your words with an adult and explain this week’s rule. Sort each word under the correct guide word. Some guide words have a C or V combination on them – C stands for consonant and V stands for vowel.
  • Tuesday: Speed Sort.  Time your child three different times sorting their words and record each of the times in the lines provided above the grid.  (Then have your child write their sort (using the grid on page 2 of the Homework Form). High frequency words written three times on the bottom in the lines provided.
  • Wednesday: Blind Sort (Lay down the guide words and then read the rest of the words aloud without showing them to your child. Your child must indicate where the word goes without seeing it.)  Rainbow write the high frequency words for the week on the lines provided.
  • Thursday: Sort and glue (sort the words and glue them to the back of the Homework Form).
Math Homework:  (Please check your child’s work and have them fix any mistakes before turning in.  Thank you!)

Ch. 3 Lesson 7

Please print and cut out the flashcards for “Adding Doubles” and “Adding Near Doubles”:  (or use your own flashcards)

Adding Doubles

Adding Near Doubles

We have been working on memorizing our “Doubles”.  Knowing doubles automatically makes “Near Double” facts easy and fast to figure out.  Quiz your child on these facts and practice as needed to increase their speed.  Many of them enjoy seeing if they can beat their time.  If they are counting to figure out the answers to their doubles, they aren’t memorized.  (Ask them to tell you what we picture in our minds for each double fact).  Please indicate that your child has worked on this by signing your name on the worksheet above.  Thank you!
