These daily one-minute timed fluency readings will help your student become a fluent reader. Time your student for one minute Monday-Thursday and record the number of words they were able to read in one minute on the front page of the Homework Form.

This week: use the “Lesson 24” page; no need to print it out, unless you’d like to.  You 
can report daily scores on the front page of the Homework Form instead.

I was asked the following questions during our 2nd week of homework, and I thought I would post them in case you may have similar questions in mind:

Question #1. Should my child be studying the spelling of “spelling words” AND studying the spelling of “word sort words?”

Answer: Students do not need to study the spelling of individual Sort Words.  They need only be familiar with the “rule” for each of the guide words so that they can phonetically figure out the spelling for related words.  

For instance, if the student knows the sound that the “ch” phonogram makes, and practices sorting words with a “ch” spelling, then he/she should be able to spell a newly introduced word that uses the same sound (i.e. after sorting the word chop, a student should be able to spell the word chat).

Question #3: How often will the “math timing” sheet be changed or updated?

Answer: That depends entirely on the progress of the class, or on the progress of individual students.  Sometimes we will switch the math fluency timing sheets every week, sometimes we will switch them every other week, and sometimes we will switch them for some students, while other students remain on the same fluency sheet.

Question #4: How quickly should my student be able to finish the math timing?

The goal by the end of the year is to finish each fluency sheet in 1 minute and 15 seconds or less.  Before the end of the year, any progress toward that goal is great!

IMPORTANT: Parents, I am so sorry: I did not have a chance today (Friday) to send home the new math fluency worksheet in the students’ blue folders.  I will be sending it home on Monday!  Thank you for your patience!

As part of our preparation for visiting Hogle Zoo, we will be doing Animal Reports!  They are not due until next Friday (September 16th).  However, the kids are SO excited about starting them, so I told them that I would post the form for the Animal Report  on the blog in case they wanted to get a head-start. 

Your child may choose any zoo animal for his/her report.  Please assist your child in researching the animal, using any means: books, encyclopedias, internet, etc., rather than simply stating what they know or believe to be true.  Click here to learn more about your animal on the Hogle Zoo website: Meet the Hogle Zoo Animals. Encourage your child to use best handwriting, because he/she will need to be able to read his/her own handwriting to create a book from the report.  The reports will be shared with the class, and your child may find it beneficial to practice reading his/her report to you prior to reading it for our class.

This activity should be completed Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.  It is not necessary to fill out a Homework Form for this week’s homework – I trust that you will do it.

1. Visit the following website: http://www.haslett.k12.mi.us/education/components/scrapbook/default.php?sectiondetailid=11283&: 
2. Select “Level 200.”  For this week, please read passage # 210 (How to Be a Good Citizen) for MONDAY and TUESDAY, and passage #211 (Symbols of Freedom Introduction) for WEDNESDAY and THURSDAY. 
3.  Complete a one-minute timed reading and record your score on the Homework Form. Feel free to use this online timer: http://www.online-stopwatch.com/timer/1minute/ . Find your score by subtracting the number of incorrect words read from the total number of words read in one minute (for instance, if you read 98 words, but read 5 of the words incorrectly, your score would be 93).   
4. Re-tell the story with as much detail as possible, and in your own words, to a parent, using the guidelines described below:

If you are able to read the entire passage in less than a minute: start again at the top of the passage and read as many more words as you can until the one-minute timing is over.  For scoring, include the total words read during the entire minute. For instance, if you read the entire passage (137 words) and then read part of it again (39 words) before the one-minute timing was over, your score would be 176 (if you had no mistakes).

• ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION TIMINGS: Complete a 2 minute timing every night for both addition and subtraction facts. Please have your child do EVERY problem in a row, not skipping any. Then draw a line where they end and they will start there the next day. PLEASE CHECK FOR ACCURACY (an answer sheet is included).  Your child should get in about 3 or 4 timings each side.
